Preface | Soka Gakkai (global)

Preface | Soka Gakkai (global)

Preface

The following is President Ikeda's preface to the new edition of The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, a three-volume collection of selected excerpts from his works, the first volume of which was published in book form in Japanese on November 18, 2020. Based on the collection of selected excerpts that was first serialized in the Daibyakurenge, the Soka Gakkai monthly study journal, from April 2014 through February 2018, the new edition contains numerous additional selections as well as a partial rearrangement of chapters.

The conversation I had with my mentor, Josei Toda, on the day we first met is still vivid in my mind today:

"Sensei, I would like to ask you a question."
"What would you like to know? Go ahead, ask whatever you wish."
"What is the correct way to live?"

It was the summer of 1947, two years after the end of World War II. In response to this earnest question from a 19-year-old youth seeking direction in life in the troubled postwar period, Mr. Toda was warm and embracing, like a compassionate father. He was a mentor who prized above all young people's desire to learn.

With powerful conviction, he introduced me to the life philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin and encouraged me to study and practice it with youthful energy and idealism. From that moment on, I steadfastly pursued the path of mentor and disciple, eagerly seeking instruction from Mr. Toda, whom I had taken as my mentor in life and in the eternal endeavor for kosen-rufu.

Ninety-eight percent of what I am today I learned from my mentor, at what I refer to as "Toda University." I once shared this point in a lecture I delivered at Columbia University Teachers College.

For Mr. Toda, a peerless humanistic educator and a leader of the people, the essence of both education and guidance in faith was encouragement. He inherited this spirit, which has today become a proud tradition of Soka, from his own mentor, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the Soka Gakkai's founder who died in prison for his beliefs.

Nichiren Daishonin affirms that "The Lotus Sutra is the teaching that enables all living beings to attain the Buddha way" (WND-1, 59). The Daishonin's Buddhism of the Sun, revealing the essence of the Lotus Sutra, is a source of compassion and wisdom that can illuminate the hearts of all people. In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, he states: "Great joy [is what] one experiences when one understands for the first time that one's mind [or life] from the very beginning has been a Buddha. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the greatest of all joys" (OTT, 211–12).

Encouragement in the realm of Soka means shining the light of the Mystic Law on each person, awakening their inherent Buddhahood, and revitalizing their lives at the most fundamental level.

As members of the Soka family, we have always reached out to support those around us, no matter how deep their sorrow, how great their despair, or how challenging their karma. We have stood together with them, encouraging them to be confident that they can surmount any hardship, find a way forward, and become happy without fail.

This great grassroots movement, undaunted by any manner of oppression, has spread throughout the world, unleashing life's innate power, fostering diverse individuals, each as unique as "the cherry, the plum, the peach, and the damson" (OTT, 200), and enabling people everywhere to triumph in their own human revolution.

It is no exaggeration to say that this movement of, by, and for the people—built upon unshakable principles and beautiful unity that seeks to empower all—is the hope of global society.

Natural disasters, pandemics, and other ongoing trials afflict people in every corner of the world, and words of encouragement play a crucial role in strengthening community ties and fortifying the resilience to rise to the challenge of various crises.

In Buddhism, the ideal of leadership is symbolized by the wheel-turning sage king, a monarch who governs with what is called a wheel treasure. Nichiren Daishonin offers the following observation:

"To go round and round unendingly in the cycle of birth and death, birth and death, throughout the three existences of past, present, and future, is what is called being a wheel-turning sage king. The wheels that the wheel-turning sage kings possess when they make their appearance in the world, their 'wheel treasures' are the words and sounds that we ourselves utter. And these sounds, our 'wheel treasures,' are Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. This is what is called 'the great wisdom of equality'" [LSOC11, 209–10]. (OTT, 76)

While steadfastly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and grappling with our own and others' sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, our words of conviction and earnest encouragement that triumph over all malicious slurs and lies are like our very own "wheel treasures" that we are turning across the globe. Inheriting this great humanistic spirit, our youthful global citizens of Soka are currently dynamically engaged in the shared endeavor to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are based on the fundamental wish that no one be left behind.

My mentor has been a constant presence in the depths of my heart in my ongoing efforts to speak and write about kosen-rufu and the meaning of life, Buddhism and society, peace and the dignity of life, youth and the future, and many other topics.

The writings, speeches, lectures, dialogues, and poetry from my lifelong struggle of words, one in spirit with my mentor, have been compiled into 150 volumes of collected works. As the compilation process was nearing completion, some of our enterprising members, brimming with youthful spirit, proposed the idea of compiling a selection of excerpts from that collection for the new era of worldwide kosen-rufu.

Motivating this project was their enthusiasm to produce a common study resource for our members around the world. Adopting the title "The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace," they set about choosing excerpts covering a range of themes and coordinating the translation of these selections.

I am delighted by their noble spirit of voluntarily taking on this time-consuming and challenging task. They have exerted themselves tirelessly to respond to the ardent seeking spirit of their fellow members, to promote the united progress of worldwide kosen-rufu, and to support the efforts of future generations of members to study Nichiren Buddhism and the Soka Gakkai spirit.

The results of their dedicated work were published in monthly installments in the Soka Gakkai's study magazine, Daibyakurenge. As I reviewed the page proofs, I felt as if I were engaging in a fresh dialogue with my beloved disciples.

Over the four years during which those installments were published in Japanese, painstaking efforts were made to translate them and ensure that readers around the world could access them. I am pleased they, along with additional excerpts, are now being published in book form, and I would like to express my boundless gratitude to all those involved in this task.

I would like to dedicate this book, a collection of words of encouragement that embody the oneness of mentor and disciple, to Presidents Makiguchi and Toda and entrust it to our precious successors.

Nichiren Daishonin states:

"When teacher and disciples have fully responded to one another and the disciples have received the teaching, so that they gain the awakening referred to where the sutra says, 'I took a vow, hoping to make all persons equal to me, without any distinction between us' [LSOC2, 70], this is what the sutra calls 'causing living beings to awaken to the Buddha wisdom'" [cf. LSOC2, 64]. (OTT, 30)

As mentors and disciples committed to fulfilling the vow of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, let us demonstrate at all times and in all places the "wisdom of the truth that functions in accordance with changing circumstances" (OTT, 10). President Toda calls to us in one of his poems that I treasure:

The journey to propagate
the Mystic Law
is long;
let us encourage each other
and advance together.

Let us, therefore, "encourage each another and advance together" as we continue on our journey to propagate the Mystic Law into the eternal future of the Latter Day of the Law!

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than if this book provides encouragement and sustenance to Soka Gakkai members everywhere as they proceed along that path.

—On August 14, 2020, the 73rd anniversary of the start of my journey of kosen-rufu alongside my mentor.

👋👋Live true to yourself!
👋👋To follow our own convictions!
👋👋To shine with supreme strength, brilliance and happiness is to base one's life on Buddhism.

🛎🛎"A person who chants strong
and consistent daimoku will
never be deadlocked"🙏📿

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

🌈🌤"To live each day to the best of your ability, to truly say that you are satisfied with what you have achieved – these unflagging efforts lead to a life of great victory.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️It may seem quite ordinary and mundane, but this is the noblest path of life. It is the path of outstanding human beings."

👋👋"First of all, let's overcome our own weaknesses.
✌️💪With this victory, we can launch a fresh and fulfilling day. Buddhist practice begins with winning over our own weaknesses."

💪😀"People who have vibrant life force are happy.
💪😄People with strong conviction are happy.
✌️✌️They can lead positive, successful lives.
😣😖Those who are weak, in contrast, are miserable.
They create misery and unhappiness for
themselves.
🙏📿Practising Nichiren Buddhism enables us to become as strong as we possibly can.
✌️✌️To live in such a way that we can perceive everything in terms of faith and are always determined to overcome everything through faith means to walk the path to eternal happiness.
🫵🫵You yourself are precious beyond measure each and every one of you.
🙏The Daishonin taught this to his disciples while he himself was facing major persecution.
🇧🇪And the Soka Gakkai's first and second presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, faithfully embraced the heart
of the Daishonin's Buddhism and taught it to people from all walks of life.
👋👋With great conviction, let us continue to forge ahead powerfully along this path, which is directly connected to Nichiren Daishonin."

👋👋To be studying the great principles
of Nichiren Buddhism is truly admirable. 👋👋Those who read the Daishonin's writings every day, even just a little at a time, are able to tap fresh inspiration that will keep their faith healthy and sound.

🙏🙏The Daishonin's writings are incredibly profound.
👍✌️📖Each reading brings new discoveries and rouses fresh
determinations.

🙏Nichiren Daishonin ✍️

👀👀"To the eyes of ordinary people, they look like characters.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️Persons of the two vehicles [i.e., voice-hearers and cause-awakened ones] perceive them as the void.
🙏😇Bodhisattvas look on them as innumerable doctrines. Buddhas recognise each character as a golden Shakyamuni.
👋👋This is what is meant by the passage that says,
🙏📖"[If one can uphold this sutra],
one will be upholding the Buddha's body" [LSOC11,220]. (WND-1, 486)

🙇🙇‍♂️🙇‍♀️Similarly, the words of a passage in the Daishonin's writings can take on a different depth of meaning depending on our life state or mind-set.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

🇧🇪💁🏻‍♂️"President Toda often used to say that when studying the Daishonin's writings, rather than focusing on the
meaning of the words,
🙏😇🙏we should strive to connect with the Daishonin's towering conviction, his solemn, fervent commitment to kosen-rufu, and his boundless compassion in seeking to lead all people to enlightenment.

😌It's fine to just read the Daishonin's writings a little bit at a time.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️It doesn't matter if you can't understand everything at first. What matters is to keep trying to read the Daishonin's writings and steadily engraving them in your life.
👋👋Over time, as you repeat that process, you will create a solid core of philosophy in your life.
Those who possess such an inner core will not be shaken by life's never-ending changes.
🙏😀The ultimate aim of our Buddhist study is to become happy. We practise Nichiren Buddhism not only for our
own happiness but to help others become happy, too."

🌞Good afternoon Myo Ho friends !
🙏Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you. 🙆‍♀️Let's encourage one other.

👋👋True friendship implies a relationship where you empathize with your friends when they're suffering and encourage them not to lose heart,
👋👋and where they, in turn, empathize with you when you're in the same boat and try to cheer you up.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

🛎🛎"Character and integrity are very
important.
💙🙏❤️A spirit of mutual respect and trust is a vital basis for real friendship.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️That said, there might naturally be times when you have arguments and disagreements with your friends.
👋👋But there should always be an underlying spirit of respect and consideration for each other, no matter how close you are.
💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️In friendship, you mustn't think only
of yourself."

🙏📖Today's Gosho: 869

💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️"Although the three inherent causes, or potentials, of the Buddha nature are possessed by all beings, if such beings do not encounter the right conditions by meeting a "good friend" or teacher, then they will not become awakened, they will not understand, their Buddha nature will not manifest itself.
🙏😇If they encounter the necessary conditions by meeting a good friend, however, then their Buddha nature will invariably become manifest.
🙇‍♀️🙇🙇‍♂️Hence such meetings are referred to as "conditions."

Nichiren Daishonin (WND2, 861)

👥Good Friends Are a Rarity🫂

🙏🇧🇪"In Buddhism, good friends lead people to the correct teaching and guide them to develop their faith in and practice of this correct teaching.
💁🏻‍♂️Nichiren Daishonin says:
🙏😇"The best way to attain Buddhahood is to encounter a good friend.
🧐🧐How far can our own wisdom take us? If we have even enough wisdom to distinguish hot from cold, we should seek out a good friend.
🫂"But encountering a good friend is the hardest possible thing to do . . .
😵‍💫Moreover, in this evil latter age, evil companions are more numerous than the dust particles that comprise the land, while good friends are fewer than the specks of dirt one can pile on a fingernail" ("Three Tripitaka Masters Pray for Rain," The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 598).

👋👋Such rare and good friends in faith not only refer to people, such as teachers in Buddhism and fellow Buddhist practitioners, but also refer to the correct teaching of Buddhism itself and the harmonious community of believers that provides support and direction in Buddhist practice.
🛎🛎Mentors are key, because they convey the correct teaching while demonstrating through their own example how to apply the ideals and philosophy of Buddhism amid the realities of daily life as they strive to lead countless people on the path to lasting happiness."

💙🙏❤️"Having good friends and advancing together with them is not half the Buddha way but all the Buddha way."
—Shakyamuni

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

🌸🌼"Spring is the time when flowers bloom.
❄️❄️But in order to bloom, flowers need the cold of winter.
🤔🤔What would happen if there was no winter?

🍁🍂In autumn, plants that bloom in spring prepare to enter a period of dormancy, or recharging.
🐿They start saving energy for the coming spring.
👉🥀If there is a sudden warm spell during their dormancy in winter and they are awakened, the buds waiting for spring's arrival start to open before they are ready, and when the winter cold returns, they wither and die.
❄️❄️To prevent that from happening, plants will not bloom unless they have fully experienced the cold of winter.
🌼🌸This is the "wisdom" of plants that enables them to bloom in spring.

🙏😇Life and Buddhist practice also follow this principle.
🔋🔌A winter of adversity is the time to recharge our batteries and temper ourselves for the arrival of a wonderful spring.
💪💪In life's winters, the eternal and indestructible energy for attaining Buddhahood is stored up, and life force as vast as the universe is forged. This energy, in addition, grows in response to adversity and hardship.
🙏😇And all who practice the correct teaching of Buddhism will without fail experience the coming of spring.

😖😣But if, in the difficult times of life's winters, we try to avoid or doubt the realm in which we strengthen our faith, and as a result we fail to accumulate enough strength and good fortune, we will never get anywhere, nor be able to lead a truly satisfying life.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️The crucial thing is how we challenge ourselves and how meaningfully we spend our time during life's winters.
🛎🛎What matters is how deeply we live with the conviction that spring will definitely arrive.
🌸🌼In the realm of nature, the flowering springtime always comes when the time is right. That is the rhythm of life and the universe.
👋👋But far too many people in the world are still in the midst of winter when they reach the end of their lives.
💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️To avoid that fate, we need to align our lives with the rhythm of the universe that calls forth spring.
🙏📿And our Buddhist practice based on faith in the Mystic Law is what enables us to do that.

🙏🪷In that sense, faith in the Mystic Law functions as our wings to eternal happiness.
💪💪Every time we overcome difficulties, we accumulate good fortune and elevate our state of life.
🙏😇By attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime, we are able to soar serenely through the vast skies of life in a state of supreme happiness and fulfillment throughout eternity. This is the teaching of Buddhism and the rhythm of life."

Imposing mountains are formed
by major crustal movements.
Likewise,
humans can also build a strong self
in the midst of upheavals.
Let's become champions of life
who can transform all trials into
priceless treasures!

*The first president of the Soka Gakkai, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, offers this profound guidance: "Although there is a saying that even dust, when it accumulates, can form a mountain, there are in fact no mountains that have been made from accumulated dust... Real mountains are formed by sudden, dramatic shifts in the earth's crust." President Makiguchi strictly teaches us here that we can only fundamentally transform ourselves and build an unshakable state of life by engaging in an earnest struggle of great good against great evil.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️"Eternal Buddhahood manifests in the depths of the lives of those who take action daily to widely declare and spread Buddhism for Mystic Law and for the happiness of those regardless of how much theory they
"know".
👋👋Such action is a source of inexpressible joy and vitality, courage and wisdom. It is the origin from whence a sense of exuberance wells forth infusing and permeating their lives.
🙏👍Their lives are filled with visible brilliance and good fortune and benefit.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️Those who truly embrace the Mystic Law are most noble just
as they are. And it is in their lives that the world of the great and eternal life
of "Life Span" chapter appears.
🙏😇This is the true condition of immortality.
😰This is a turbulent age, an age of drastic changes. At times, you may feel swallowed up by your hardships. 😥You may confront many trials and tribulations in life.
🛎🛎What is important is to develop strong confidence in the Gohonzon, no matter what happens.
🙏🌞Please reveal the brilliant sun of "eternal life" in your life.
💪💪Let us soar courageously into the morning sky of hope with the everlasting vigour of a phoenix!"

🙏"The Daishonin says that even if we face many difficulties,
👋👋as long as we persevere undefeated and remain steadfast in our faith, then the benefit of attaining Buddhahood will naturally come to us of Itself.
🙏😇This is termed "gaining Buddhahood without seeking it.

🧐🧐Why should we be able to attain Buddhahood even if we do not seek it, if
we continue to carry through faith in face of difficulties?
💁🏻‍♀️Firstly, it is because the lives of all living beings are inherently entities of Myoho-renge-kyo or the Mystic Law.
💁🏻‍♂️And secondly, it is because our strong faith causes the limitless functions of Myoho-renge-kyo that reside within our lives to manifest without impediment.
🙏😇So that is why Nichiren Daishonin said that Buddhahood naturally comes to us of itself. "

( 📝To be continued on….)

📚President Ikeda gave a lecture on how Myoho-renge-kyo comes to function in our lives .

When you are filled with joy, you will ignite the same joy in all those who see you. Not only will you yourself savour a joyous life state and daily existence but you will help others do the same. Good Day Myo Ho friends !
🙏Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you.
🙆‍♀️Let's encourage one other.
👋👋The path to achieving the goal of Buddhist practice is attaining the life state of Buddhahood.
👋👋"Human Revolution" is a state of perfecting oneself in this present lifetime.
👋👋The aim of our Buddhist practice is none other than achieving our human revolution.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's guidance

💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️7 signs of inner transformation based on a life of courageous action.

📚The New Human Revolution, Vol 19, Chapter" Sunlight" , pg 184–88

🇧🇪Ikeda Sensei ✍️

🙏🪷😇 "Our lives, both body and spirit, are entities of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and human revolution is the process of manifesting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the life state of Buddhahood, therein.

🤔🤔What, then, characterizes human revolution?
🧐🧐What does it look like?

💁🏻‍♂️I offer some points on this subject to you today.

1. 🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️Health
✅"The first is regarding health.
We need to demonstrate the power of our practice in accord with the concept of 'faith manifested in health.'
💁🏻‍♂️Of course, the question of karma is also involved; nevertheless, when our health is compromised we cannot be as active as we would like.
💁🏻‍♀️Given that we are made of flesh and blood, it is only natural that we will experience sickness.
🛎But the important thing is our earnest Buddhist prayer to be healthy and to attune our lives to the fundamental rhythm of the universe at the deepest level.
🛎🛎Without such profundity in our prayer and a balanced lifestyle, we cannot say that we are genuinely practicing Nichiren Buddhism."

2. 💃🕺Youthfulness
✅The second characteristic.
Maintaining a youthful spirit throughout our lives is proof of our human revolution. 👋👋As long as we continue to practice vibrantly and strive to improve and develop ourselves, we will never lose our youthful spirit.

3. 🙏🧧Good Fortune
✅The third characteristic was good fortune.
🙏📿✌️ All of the victories we achieve through chanting sincerely and working diligently for kosen-rufu come back to us as benefit and good fortune that adorn our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
🙏😇In our turbulent society, it is this good fortune that protects us and enables us to experience genuine fulfillment.

4. 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️Wisdom
✅The fourth quality was wisdom.
👍✌️To perfect ourselves and develop into leaders who can function effectively in society, we need to cultivate our minds. Failing to do so will lead to our defeat.

5. 💙💛❤️Passion
✅The fifth distinguishing characteristic is passion.
🙏🇧🇪True practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism burn with a passionate spirit to achieve kosen-rufu, and their lives shine. 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️No matter how intelligent we are, if we lose our passion and enthusiasm, it would be no exaggeration to say that we are little better than a living corpse. Passion is also a requirement for happiness.
🛎🛎For the most part, whether we are happy comes down to whether we can feel passionate about things in our lives.

6. 🙏💪Conviction
✅The sixth quality was conviction.
🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻Human revolution means to become a person who shines with firm conviction.
💁🏻‍♂️💁💁🏻‍♀️Without a sound philosophy, without conviction, we are like a ship without a compass; we lose our way in life and run the risk of becoming shipwrecked when the winds of adversity start to blow.

7. ✌️✌️Victory
✅The seventh and final characteristic of human revolution was victory.
🙏✌️Buddhism is about winning.
💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️It is through our achieving victory upon victory that we carry out our human revolution. A life of victory is a life of human revolution. Our lives and kosen-rufu are a struggle. When we triumph in those struggles, we can demonstrate the truth and correctness of our cause.

🙏🇧🇪After offering these seven characteristics of human revolution on
-health, youthfulness, good fortune,
wisdom, passion, conviction and victory-
💁🏻‍♂️Ikeda Sensei went on to say that being a true Buddhist practitioner also requires
bringing forth one's compassion, which embraces all of these characteristics."

💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️"When we make faith for overcoming hardships the foundation of our lives, we can definitely transform the negative into something positive in accord with the principle of changing poison into medicine.
🙏💪We can also definitely transform our karma, attain Buddhahood in this lifetime and open the path of kosen-rufu ever wider."

"Nichiren Buddhism enables us to find deeper meaning in hardships, encouraging us to see them as opportunities for strengthening our faith and our lives. Our faith grows stronger through confronting and challenging our karma head-on. The purpose of our Buddhist practice is to establish a serene, unshakeable state of happiness.

"The established Buddhist schools of the Daishonin's day taught that people's suffering and hardships were retribution for their negative causes, or bad karma, from past existences. But that explanation could not serve as a force for breaking through and transforming real-life challenges.

"Nichiren Buddhism, on the other hand, is a teaching that enables people to change their destiny. That is because the Mystic Law is the fundamental means for overcoming all suffering."
