April 28, 1253 The Birth of a ‘Religion for All Humanity’ - World Tribune

April 28, 1253 The Birth of a 'Religion for All Humanity' - World Tribune

April 28, 1253 The Birth of a 'Religion for All Humanity'

In making tough decisions in life, it often comes down to choosing between taking the easy way out or finding the courage to do what's right, no matter how hard that may be.

The story of Nichiren Daishonin[1] first proclaiming his teaching offers insights into how we all can win over ourselves and find true fulfillment.

It was at noon on April 28, 1253, when Nichiren declared his teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. He did so at Seicho-ji, a temple in Japan's Awa Province (present-day Chiba Prefecture).

He taught that by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all people, no matter their social standing or background, can immediately summon forth their Buddha nature and achieve enlightenment, or unshakable happiness, in this lifetime.

This daring act challenged the established Buddhist schools and their many powerful adherents, and Nichiren knew it would bring opposition and persecution.

He began his lecture that day by strongly refuting the Nembutsu, or Pure Land, school of Buddhism, which had wide appeal not only among commoners but among powerful figures in society and government, not to mention many priests. The Nembutsu school taught that devoting oneself to a Buddha named Amida would bring salvation by being reborn in the distant Pure Land of Perfect Bliss, where that Buddha was said to reside. This otherworldly focus left believers feeling powerless to change their circumstances and yearning for a faraway paradise.

This teaching directly contradicts the Lotus Sutra, which teaches that all people can attain Buddhahood in this world and in this lifetime. Nichiren's refutation stemmed from his resolve to uproot beliefs and assumptions that cause people to doubt their ability to transform their lives.

Ikeda Sensei explains:

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the fundamental path that enables the people of the Latter Day[2] to manifest their Buddha nature. In the sense that it was the Daishonin who opened this path, it could be said that he founded the "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo school of Buddhism." His teaching, however, goes beyond the narrow margins of a single school, in that its doors are open to all people everywhere. In other words, the Daishonin initiated a religion for all humanity.[3]

Nichiren's Two Great Vows

Nichiren writes of making two great vows.

When at 12, he vowed to "become the wisest person in Japan."[4]

And at 32, just before declaring his teaching, he vowed to speak out against slander of the Lotus Sutra and to spread the correct teaching to lead all people to happiness, even if that meant facing endless persecution.

He entered Seicho-ji at age 12 to receive a basic education. Even then, he pondered how to alleviate the suffering of his parents and others around him.

Growing up, he had experienced the chaotic aftermath brought on by a power struggle between a retired emperor and the military government. And he saw how the established Buddhist schools were powerless to address the situation.

Sensei explains:

On the one hand, the age of the Latter Day of the Law, governed by greed and power, was proceeding. On the other, the inability of traditional Buddhism to lead people to happiness had become apparent. In the midst of this, the yearning for a new Buddhism that could serve that purpose and transform the age intensified, as did the Daishonin's fervent wish to become the "wisest person in all Japan."[5]

With this wish, Nichiren entered the priesthood at 16. For the next 16 years, he traveled widely and examined Buddhist sutras and teachings in Kamakura, at Mount Hiei (a center of Buddhist learning in Japan) and in other places. His deepening understanding of Buddhism helped him broaden his vow to encompass all of humanity.

In 1253, he returned to Seicho-ji to lecture on his findings from his studies, point out the errors of the Nembutsu school and proclaim a new teaching. Before that, he had thought about the possible outcomes of this daring act, which he describes in "The Opening of the Eyes":

If I remain silent, I may escape persecutions in this lifetime, but in my next life I will most certainly fall into the hell of incessant suffering. If I speak out, I am fully aware that I will have to contend with the three obstacles and four devils.[6] But of these two courses, surely the latter is the one to choose.[7]

Soon after Nichiren declared his teaching, local government official and ardent Nembutsu believer Tojo Kagenobu ordered an attack on him. He managed to escape this first of many persecutions. Yet, Nichiren never wavered.

He states:

I vowed to summon up a powerful and unconquerable desire for the salvation of all beings and never to falter in my efforts.[8]

A Buddha Is a Person of Courage, Tenacity and Continuous Action

In daily life and in Buddhist practice, we often face crossroads between the path of least resistance or the more arduous path of working toward our dreams and for the happiness and peace of our families and communities.

As Nichiren exemplifies, our Buddhist practice teaches us the importance of battling the negativity that arises in our lives that tries to keep us from advancing toward genuine happiness and fulfillment. Sensei explains:

A Buddha is not a superhuman being; one who has attained this state continues to experience problems, suffering and pain, and is still subject to illness and to temptation by devilish forces. For that reason, a Buddha is a person of courage, tenacity and continuous action who struggles ceaselessly against devilish functions.

No matter how lofty a state we may achieve, without continuous efforts to advance and improve, our faith can be destroyed in a moment.[9]

April 28 is a day to renew our own resolve to live powerfully as Buddhas, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, facing and winning over our obstacles, and deepening our vow to spread this Buddhism with the same heart as Nichiren. Sensei writes:

The Daishonin calls on us to carry on the struggle he initiated, which is the very wellspring of kosen-rufu, and never allow its flow to cease. He also instructs us to enable as many people as possible to receive the boundless benefit of the Mystic Law, for therein lies the brilliant path of peace and happiness for humankind.[10]

Notes
1 Daishonin: Literally, "great sage." This honorific title refers to Nichiren and shows reverence for him as the Buddha who appeared in the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law to lead people to Buddhahood.
2 Latter Day of the Law: The last of the three periods following Shakyamuni's death, when Buddhism falls into confusion and Shakyamuni's teachings lose the power to lead people to enlightenment. It is said to correspond to the present age.

6 Three obstacles and four devils: various obstacles and hindrances to the practice of Buddhism. The three obstacles are: 1) the obstacle of earthly desires, 2) the obstacle of karma and 3) the obstacle of retribution. The four devils are: 1) the hindrance of the five components, 2) the hindrance of earthly desires, 3) the hindrance of death and 4) the hindrance of the devil king.

🌞Good afternoon Myo Ho friends !
🙏 Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you.
🙆‍♀️Together we encourage one other.
👋👋Buddhism sees us all as related and owing debts of gratitude to one another.
👋👋Challenging our human revolution is the way to repay our debts of gratitude.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's
guidances.

🙏"Gratitude entails knowing to whom we
are indebted for our present life and circumstances and, by dedicating ourselves to our Buddhist practice, repaying the kindnesses showed to us.

💙🤝❤️In another sense, showing gratitude means elevating our state of life from one of being supported by others to one of supporting others, drawing the power to do so from the innermost depths of our being.
🙏📖In Sanskrit, there is the expression kritajna, which literally means
"acknowledging (jna)
what has been done on one's behalf (krita)."
🙆🙆‍♀️🙆🏻‍♂️After one acknowledges and appreciates what has been done for one, the next step is to live a life dedicated to the welfare of others.
👉This is the is the origin of the term repaying debts of gratitude that appears in the Chinese sutras.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️Knowing and having appreciation that who we are now is the result of the actions and support of many others can powerfully affirm our sense of self and help us build a foundation for our life and our ongoing personal growth.

👋👋Showing our gratitude is the challenge of human revolution, the process by which we can develop our potential to the greatest
possible extent.

🙏✍️In this letter, Nichiren discusses the four debts of gratitude owed by all.

✅The first is the debt of gratitude to one's father and mother.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦How infinitely profound is the debt we owe to our parents who gave us life and nurtured us!
💁🏻‍♂️Nichiren says that our debt to our father is higher than Mount Sumeru,"and our debt to our mother is deeper than the ocean (see WND-2, 637).
💁🏻‍♀️We must find some way of repaying this enormous debt.
🫡The first thing we need to do, he tells us, is to take faith in Buddhism.
👩‍❤️‍👨Parents' greatest wish is for the growth and happiness of their children, so entering the path to happiness by Having FAITH AND PRACTICING BUDDHISM IS THE KINDEST THING WE CAN DO FOR OUR PARENTS AND THE BEST WAY TO SHOW OUR GRATITUDE TO THEM.

✅✅Second is the debt of gratitude to the nation's ruler. This is the gratitude owed to the sovereign for supporting one's livelihood, thereby providing one with food, shelter, and clothing.
🌇In today's democratic world, where sovereignty rests with the people, it is gratitude to society itself.
🙏Similarly, therefore, Nichiren's remarks about praying for the ruler to "enjoy peace and security in his present existence and good circumstances in future existences"
(WND-2, 637)
🙏🌆could today be interpreted as PRAYING FOR THE HAPPINESS OF EVERY MEMBER OF SOCIETY.
✅✅✅The third is the debt of gratitude to all living beings.
🪐LIFE IS ETERNAL, extending through the three existences of past, present, and future;
🪷🙏♻️the sutras teach that we have been born in this world after having undergone the cycle of birth and death infinite times.
👨‍🦳👵🏻FROM THAT POINT OF VIEW, AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER IN THE PAST, ALL MEN HAVE BEEN OUR FATHER AND ALL WOMEN HAVE BEEN OUR MOTHER.
🙏🛎Buddhism sees us all as related and owing debts of gratitude to one another.

🙏👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Nichiren indicates here that this is why we should wish for the happiness of all people.
😇Since supreme happiness lies in attaining the life state of Buddhahood,
THE BEST WAY TO SHOW OUR GRATITUDE TO OTHERS IS TO TEACH THEM BUDDHISM, THE ULTIMATE MEANS FOR GAINING ENLIGHTENMENT.

🇧🇪Mr. Toda said: "True greatness means
that, even if you forget what you've done for others, you never forget what others have done for you and always do your utmost to repay your debts of gratitude. 🪷🌟✨Therein shines the light of Buddhism.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️Such people radiate integrity, depth of character, generosity, and charm."

🇧🇪Ikeda Sensei's encouragement :
🙏"This, too, is the conclusion at which I have arrived after more than sixty years of
Buddhist practice.
😮‍💨I have seen many different people-
people who have lived lives of gratitude, people who have been ingrates.

👋👋Those who have a sense of
appreciation and gratitude are loved and trusted by everyone and lead lives of tremendous fulfillment and satisfaction. 💙🙏❤️Based on Nichiren's teachings, it is clear that the inner radiance of those who embody true gratitude will imbue their lives with indestructible good fortune and benefits throughout the three existences."

🌞Good afternoon Myo Ho friends!
🙏 Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you.
🙆‍♀️Together we encourage one other.
👋👋In the power of faith !
👋👋Let us continue to advance forever with " Faith based on the Gohonzon," striving to carry on the Daishonin's spirit, based on the Gosho and on chanting Nam Myoho Renge kyo.

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's
guidances.

💙🙏❤️Nichiren Daishonin highlighted on the importance of pure hearted faith:
"As a child refuses to leave its mother" (WND-1, 1036).
👩🏻‍🍼Certainly, an infant is entirely dependent on its mother, trusting utterly in her love.
👉The Daishonin uses this example to illustrate the primary importance of faith. 🛎Our lives, in a sense, start with placing our trust or faith in this world around us.

🇧🇪Ikeda Sensei ✍️
🇺🇸"The American journalist Norman Cousins (1915-90), with whom I engaged in a dialogue, was extremely interested in the power of faith or belief.
💁🏻‍♂️Beginning with his own experience of overcoming serious illness, he offers many
documented examples demonstrating the
power of positive belief in the healing process.
✍️As he wrote: "Nothing is more wondrous about the fifteen billion neurons in the human brain than their ability to convert thoughts, hopes, ideas, and attitudes into chemical substances.
🛎🛎Everything begins, therefore, with belief.
👤🙏💪WHAT WE BELIEVE IS THE MOST POWERFUL OPTION OF ALL."

✅Everything begins with our prayer.🙏

🪆"The great Russian author Leo Tolstoy
(1828-1910) also stressed the amazing
power of faith.
👉 A character in one of his novels declares:
🫵"A battle is won by the side that has firmly resolved to win and
🛎 "One must believe in the possibility of happiness in order to be happy."

💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️Faith is the indispensable foundation of human existence and the path of our lives is DECIDED BY HOW STRONG OR WEAK OUR FAITH IS.

🛎🙏The Gohonzon Exists Within Us.
🛎🙏Fervent faith that continues to sincerely seek and embrace the Gohonzon is essential in order to savor such great benefit.
🛎🙏Bringing forth through courage to face difficult realities head on,
✅the wisdom to surmount the obstacles arising from within and from without,
✅and the powerful life force to make new strides forward.
🛎🙏Sufferings that aid one's personal transformation and growth, a springboard to great development."

😇🌟✨ 🌟 Illuminated by the five characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the noble state of life that is one with the Mystic Law functions vibrantly even in the world of hell.
👉The meaning of the sufferings of hell is thereby turned around completely.

💁🏻‍♂️While in prison, the founding Soka Gakkai president,
🇧🇪Tsunesaburo Makiguchi Sensei ✍️"CONCENTRATING INTENTLY ON MY FAITH IS MY WORK RIGHT NOW.
IF I CAN DO THAT, I AM NOT THE LEAST BIT ANXIOUS.
🙇🙇‍♂️🙇‍♀️Depending on one's frame of mind, even hell can be enjoyable.

💁🏻‍♂️Mr. Toda also said that if we base ourselves on the Gohonzon, we can gain a state of being in which we are filled with boundless joy wherever we go.
👋👋Every person's life is an entity that inherently embodies the principles of the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds and the three thousand realms in a single moment of life.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️In essence, every person's life is perfect and complete there is nothing extraneous to be subtracted and nothing lacking that needs to be added.
🙏No existence is without its joys and
sorrows, its ups and downs.
💁🏻‍♀️💁💁🏻‍♂️And no matter how we might try, we cannot avoid the universal sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death."

Rage is the world of hell, greed is that of hungry spirits, foolishness is that of animals, perversity is that of asuras, joy is that of heaven, and calmness is that of human beings. 🌞Good afternoon Myo Ho Friends
🌈🪺Happy Sunday.🐣🥚
🙏 Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you.
🙆‍♀️Together we encourage one other.
🇧🇪From the Buddhist view that life continues through both birth and death, whether we are living or dead-or, as
😇Nichiren phrase it,
🌇Here in the Saha world or
🌄in the pure land of Eagle Peak-
🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻🙋🏻‍♂️WE REMAIN FOREVER COMRADES IN THE SHARED STRUGGLE FOR KOSENRUFU .
🙆🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♀️🙆We remain members of the Soka family, fellow members in faith, our lives eternally aspiring on the VERY DEEPEST LEVEL for the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law and a fundamental transformation in the Karma of humankind.🙏

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's
guidances.

🙏😇A correct and steadfast mind at the moment of death is the proof of attaining Buddhahood.

😇✅A steadfast and correct mind at the moment of death:
🙏"To maintain unwavering belief in the Mystic Law until the last moment of
one's life. It means that when we continue to follow the Buddha way, confident that we will attain Buddhahood in this lifetime, we will be able to greet death with a sense of profound fulfillment."

🇧🇪Ikeda Sensei ✍️

🙏"The Daishonin says that just as black lacquer will turn white when white powder is added, the Mystic Law has the power to eradicate any offense.
📖As proof of this, he comments on the difference in appearance at the moment of death of a person who has sincerely lived in accord with the Mystic Law and one who has slandered the Law and is destined to fall into a state of Hell.

🛎🛎Since this is a well-known passage in which the Daishonin discusses the appearance or countenance of the deceased,
✅🛎I would like to confirm an important point regarding the moment of death.
While the Daishonin uses such statements as
🙏🙇‍♀️"her countenance will become pure and
🙏🙇‍♀️white" and "her body will be as light as a goose feather and as soft and pliable
as cotton"
🙏🙏to describe the appearance of deceased individuals who have upheld the
Mystic Law to the end of their lives, what
is most important at the moment of death
is a person's heart or state of mind-in
other words, their having
✅"a correct and
steadfast mind at the moment of death."
👉When it comes to physical appearance,
individuals of course differ widely, and
this is definitely not an absolute standard
for determining whether or not someone
has attained Buddhahood.
👉👉Consequently, there is no point in getting caught up in what a person's appearance is like after they die.
💁🏻‍♂️When the Daishonin says that a deceased person's "countenance will become pure and white, we can take this to refer to an inner radiance that is manifested in their expression-
🙏😇-the joyful expression,
🙏📿🙇‍♂️for instance, of a person departing for their next existence embraced in the voices of friends and loved ones chanting daimoku for their happiness; the bright, gentle expression of a person who exudes an ineffable serenity; the noble expression of a person who shines with the triumph of a lofty mission fulfilled, imparting courage and hope to all beholders.

🙏Some people die young.
🙏🙏Some people die in unforeseen accidents.
🙏🙏🙏And some people die after long battles with illness.

👋👋But whatever the case, there is no need to worry.
💙🙏❤️What matters is a person's heart at the final moment, not the manner of their death.
💙💪❤️What matters is whether that
person has persevered in faith to the very end.

🙏📖In the Gosho, the Daishonin cites
the the Nirvana Sutra, which states:
🐘'A mad elephant can only destroy your body; it cannot destroy your mind [eg, your heart]." (WND-2, p 135)
🚑In modern terms, "mad elephants" might correspond to things like traffic accidents.

👉This passage means that even if our body should be destroyed in some untoward circumstance like being trampled by a mad elephant,
🙏🙇‍♀️our mind or the essence of our being, which has accumulated great good fortune and benefit through our upholding the Mystic Law in this lifetime, can never be destroyed.

👉Regardless of how a person may die, if
they have formed a deep connection with the Mystic Law and devoted themselves wholeheartedly to their mission in this world, they are sure to shine with a magnificent inner brilliance at the
moment of death.
🙏On this we can absolutely rest assured.
💁🏻‍♂️It is the manifestation of an inscrutable causality.

💙🙏❤️A person's heart is always most important."

🌈"Life will be enjoyable. And death will be peaceful, a glorious journey to the next enjoyable life.
🍂When winter arrives, the trees and other plants temporarily lose their leaves. 🍃But these plants possess the life to send forth new green shoots when spring comes.
🙏🪷🙏Human death is like that, but we potentially possess a life force that leads us to a new life -
🇧🇪🙏to a new mission - immediately, and without pain."

The Shakyamuni Buddha within our lives is the eternal Buddha since time without beginning, who obtained the three bodies more than numberless major world system dust particle kalpas ago."

18th Apr. Daily Guidance By Daisaku Ikeda:

To a person who is possessed by the lust for power, even the most selfless, benevolent actions of others will appear as cunning moves undertaken to gain power. Similarly, to a person who has a strong desire for fame, actions based on conviction and consideration will be seen as publicity stunts. Those who have become slaves of money simply cannot believe that there are people in the world who are strangers to the desire for wealth. 🙏🏻

Good day Myo Ho Friends !
🌈Have a smooth week ahead!
🙏 Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo to you.
👋👋 As long as our mind of faith is connected to the Gohonzon, our benefits will never disappear .
🙏💪The power of the Gohonzon is absolute.
👋👋Please be assured that we are accumulating inconspicuous benefit that with the passage of time, we will surely attain a life state of complete fulfilment and satisfaction through our practice of continuous chanting Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo.

🙏📿"Put your complete faith in the Gohonzon, and pray with all your being.
To realise your prayers and transform your karma, it's vital to have firm conviction in faith.
🙏💪The power of the Gohonzon is absolute.
💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️The purpose of Buddhism is to enable all people to become happy."

🙏"The Gohonzon exists for the happiness of all people, for all humanity.
🙏The Gohonzon exists to transform the karma of humanity, for the sake
of world peace.
🙏The Gohonzon exists for the realization of kosen-rufu."

📝Let's learn from Ikeda Sensei's
guidances.

🌈🌤"Day after day, a new sun rises on the lives of those who uphold the Mystic Law.
💪A vigorous and rich life force wells up in them. They feel younger year by year, and their lives are filled with good fortune even in their last years.
👉We can see, then, that Buddhism shows us the way to solve various problems which we confront as our society ages."

🙏"As long as our mind of faith is connected to the Gohonzon, our benefits will never disappear.
🛎That's why it is vital for us to persevere in our Buddhist practice throughout our lives no matter what, even if on some days our physical condition or other circumstances prevent us from doing gongyo and chanting daimoku to our full satisfaction.
✌️Those who continue to challenge themselves to the end savor ultimate victory."

👉"Age is not an excuse for giving up. Allowing yourself to grow passive and draw back is a sign of personal defeat.
💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♂️There may be a retirement age at work, but there is no retirement age in life."

🇧🇪Ikeda Sensei's encouragement:
🙏💁🏻‍♂️💁🏻‍♀️"I cannot emphasise too strongly my hope that you will all take good care of your health.
💙🙏❤️ Please make good health a top priority in your daily lives, including your work and your activities for kosen-rufu.
💙🙏❤️Please direct your prayers, wisdom, care and efforts towards staying healthy so that you may live long. I also wish all of you secure and comfortable lives."

"The Daishonin declares: 'The wonderful means of truly putting an end to the physical and spiritual obstacles of all living beings is none other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo' (WND–1, 842). There are no obstacles that cannot be overcome by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. There are no deadlocks in Nichiren Buddhism. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the 'wonderful means' for breaking through all obstacles and forging ahead freely in life with courage and composure. That is why the Daishonin urges: 'Employ the strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other" (WND–1, 1001). When we base our lives on the 'strategy of the Lotus Sutra'— that is, faith in the Mystic Law—we will overcome all problems without fail."

Today there are people who have faith in the Lotus Sutra. The belief of some is like fire while that of others is like water. When the former listen to the teachings, their passion flares up like fire, but as time goes on, they tend to discard their faith. To have faith like water means to believe continuously without ever regressing. 🙏🏻

The Two Kinds of Faith

"One of the subjects Professor Arnold Toynbee and I discussed was that the way people respond to difficulties in their environment forms the groundwork for the development of their particular civilisation. One of the conclusions Professor Toynbee had reached, based on his monumental understanding of history, was the theory of 'challenge and respond.' He keenly perceived that new civilisations emerge from tenacious societies whose people, when faced with some test by the environment – including nature—responded to the challenge and refused to be defeated by it."
