Sometimes, my problems feel overwhelming. What to do?

Combating stress starts by changing how we feel about our problems. SGI President Ikeda calls our inner resolve our "secret weapon."

He says: "Through the power of strong inner resolve, we can transform ourselves, those around us and the land where we live. Each of you has this tool, this 'secret weapon.' There is no greater treasure . . .

"Everything depends on our attitude or inner resolve, on the kind of philosophy and convictions that we cherish. Our environment or circumstances are not the determining factors. When we advance resolutely based on this . . . then all the hardships we experience will pave the golden path of our mission" (July 11, 1997, World Tribune, p. 12).

From the irritations of daily life or serious personal problems to global challenges that threaten humanity, it may seem easier to escape or ignore difficult issues that make us feel stressed, powerless and overwhelmed. Some might wish for a magic cure-all, but no such thing exists.

Dr. Hans Selye, a pioneer researcher on the physiological effects of stress, found that fortifying our ability to view stress as a flavorful "spice of life" can help us savor the good in life and bring forth the vitality needed to move our lives forward.

Similarly, President Ikeda emphasizes that stress serves as an "impetus for growth, for developing our life condition." He continues: "One of the names of the Buddha is One Who Can Forbear. That strength, that power to survive, is the life state of the Buddha" (July 5, 1996, World Tribune, p. 10).

Based on his own battle with cancer, Dr. Selye offered three ways to build a constructive life: 1) turn feelings of resentment and anger, which lower resistance to stress, into respect and sympathy; 2) set goals for yourself; and 3) live for the benefit of others, for in so doing, you yourself will benefit. (See On Being Human, pp. 79–82.)

These ideas are directly in line with Nichiren Buddhism's teaching that squarely facing adversity and rooting out negativity is the only way to reveal Buddhahood, our highest potential, which is the aim of our practice.

Nichiren Daishonin, clearly states: "Iron, when heated in the flames and pounded, becomes a fine sword. Worthies and sages are tested by abuse" ("Letter from Sado," The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 303).

Since no one can escape hardships, what's most important is how we use them to become "worthies and sages" of life, and make our lives much richer and more enjoyable.

Determined Prayer Is the Key

To transform how we view our problems and strengthen our resolve,
it is vital for us as Nichiren Buddhists to abundantly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Nichiren encourages us: "Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what happens" ("Happiness in This World," WND-1, 681).

At times, we may give in to feelings of defeat due to our struggles. However, when we diligently chant, we can raise our life condition and win over each challenge. President Ikeda says:

The important thing is to continue chanting, no matter what. Whether our prayers are answered right away or not, we must keep chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, without harboring any doubts. Those who maintain such faith will eventually attain the supreme path and highest pinnacle of value and savor the conviction that everything unfolded in the very best and most meaningful way. They will build immensely fulfilling lives and come to regard everything as a source of joy and a part of their mission.

By Helping Others, We Help Ourselves

The point about living for the benefit of others benefits yourself directly aligns with our "bodhisattva practice," a vital aspect of Nichiren Buddhism that entails developing ourselves while teaching others about Buddhism. As Nichiren instructs: "You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others" ("The True Aspect of All Phenomena," WND-1, 386).

Helping those around us leads to breaking through our lesser selves and transforming tendencies such as anger into compassion, greed into generosity and resentment into appreciation. President Ikeda says:

When we look after and care for others—that is, help others draw forth their life force—our own life force increases. When we help people expand their state of life, our state of life also expands. That is the wonderful thing about the bodhisattva way. The practice for benefiting others is one and the same with the practice for benefiting ourselves.

Roberto Baggio wins special award from peace laureates

Italian football star Roberto Baggio is this year's winner of a special award bestowed annually by the world's Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

Baggio, 43, the FIFA player of the year in 1993, was chosen on Tuesday for the Peace Summit Award 2010 for his longtime efforts in charities, including pressing for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's detained pro-democracy leader and Peace laureate, the office of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates said on Tuesday.

Baggio is more known for his football glory. But he has also helped fund hospitals, including raising money to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake and fighting bird flu, as well as supporting the work of the United Nations.

Daimoku, gongyo

㊗️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🧧🈵️🈵️The amount of Daimoku we chant each day is the good fortune and benefit we create by exerting ourselves in faith and will definitely manifest themselves in the lives of our children, grandchildren and all our family.

🇷🇴Buddhism is the supreme medicine.

The Daishonin says that the benefit of faith extends to the "preceding seven generations and the seven generations that followed." ( MW-7,172). (LG,p.139)

Who Are Bodhisattvas of the Earth?

A basic tenet of Nichiren Buddhism is that we should strive to reveal our own Buddhahood while also helping others do the same. This ideal is inherent in the state of life called "bodhisattva," which is characterized by the deep compassion to help others.

Although many descriptions of bodhisattvas appear in Buddhist scriptures, Bodhisattvas of the Earth are first described in "Emerging from the Earth," the 15th chapter of the Lotus Sutra.

In this chapter, countless bodhisattvas express their desire to propagate the Mystic Law after Shakyamuni Buddha's passing, but he rejects them, saying that those who will "protect, embrace, read, recite and widely preach this sutra"[1] already exist in this world. The sutra then depicts an astonishing series of events: The earth splits open and a vast multitude of bodhisattvas emerge from the earth in unison, each emitting a golden hue and possessing the Buddha's thirty-two features.[2] They are also each accompanied by an entourage of innumerable bodhisattvas.

Astonished by the sudden and dazzling appearance of these Bodhisattvas of the Earth, the other bodhisattvas ask the Buddha where these impressive disciples came from. Shakyamuni reveals that they are disciples he has been teaching since the unimaginably distant past. Because they have tempered their lives by earnestly practicing the Mystic Law for countless lifetimes, they can spread the Mystic Law in the Latter Day—a time of strife and deep suffering—even while undergoing great persecution. Ultimately, the "earth" that they arise from is the great Law at the core of the Lotus Sutra, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Nichiren perfectly exemplifies a Bodhisattva of the Earth, having endured harsh persecutions in his struggle to spread Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. And he urges his disciples to awaken to their innate brilliance and power as well.

He writes: "There should be no discrimination among those who propagate the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo in the Latter Day of the Law, be they men or women. Were they not Bodhisattvas of the Earth, they could not chant the daimoku"; and, "If you are of the same mind as Nichiren, you must be a Bodhisattva of the Earth" ("The True Aspect of All Phenomena," The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 385).

Bodhisattvas of the Earth are inherently Buddhas. But rather than being satisfied with attaining enlightenment for themselves, they have chosen to willingly go out and actively engage with people amid the harsh realities of society. There, they demonstrate the power of Buddhist practice through winning over all manner of obstacles and helping others do the same. Buddhas, Nichiren teaches, reveal themselves in this world through their actions as bodhisattvas.

Rooted in Nichiren's example and teaching, and based on the modern-day practice of Nichiren Buddhism as established by Soka Gakkai presidents Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda, SGI members today proudly carry on and spread the bodhisattva way of life.

SGI President Ikeda writes: "You may look at your fellow members who seem to be suffering from such problems as illness or financial hardship and think that they could not possibly be Bodhisattvas of the Earth. In fact, nobody can avoid problems. The point is that once we awaken to the mission of kosen-rufu and begin to engage in it, the life state of a Bodhisattva of the Earth and the great life state of the Buddha well up powerfully from the depths of our being.

"Buddhas are never defeated by misfortune or problems. They transform all their sufferings into joy, expand their life state and do their human revolution" (The New Human Revolution, vol. 19, p. 272)


SGI PRESIDENT IKEDA'S GUIDANCE

The following is an excerpt from The New Human Revolution. SGI President Ikeda appears in the novel as Shin'ichi Yamamoto.

Shin'ichi [Yamamoto] delved deeper into the true nature of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth: "The essential characteristic of a bodhisattva is their vow. The vow of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth is to propagate the Lotus Sutra. That's why wholeheartedly chanting to realize our vow of bringing happiness to all around us is important. Strictly speaking, chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo without that vow is not the prayer of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth."

The bodhisattva vow brims with the Buddha's life force, enabling one to triumph over devilish functions.

Shin'ichi wanted every single member to experience great benefits. He wanted each of them to overcome all forms of suffering such as illness and poverty, and become happy. The vow to achieve kosen-rufu is the key to fulfilling such prayers.

We all have various problems and sufferings. Our dedication to kosen-rufu is crucial in surmounting them. For example, if someone suffering from illness vows to overcome that illness in order to gain the strength and life force to freely take action for kosen-rufu, and demonstrate the power of their Buddhist practice to others, that vow will bring forth immense strength to overcome that illness.

Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo of course results in benefit. But when the prayer "I want to overcome my illness" is infused with a deep sense of mission, we experience a fundamental transformation within our lives, within our state of being, and that vow triggers a powerful momentum to change our karma. When we chant in earnest based on a vow to achieve kosen-rufu, the life state of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth manifests itself within us, the life state of Nichiren Daishonin begins to pulse within us, and we are able to manifest our innate Buddhahood. This is a revolution of our state of life, and it makes possible a dramatic transformation of our karma. (vol. 24, pp. 49–50)
