This is not limited to words on a page. What he was describing is an attitude of the heart, an openness to the world, a vital sense of the connection between one's life and the life within all things. The "poetic spirit" is the impulse, the vibrancy, at the core of all artistic expression--music, art, dance and literature.</p> <p style="max-width: 100%;">"The poetic spirit," said Ikeda, himself an acclaimed <a href="sub/resources/works/poet/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%; text-decoration: underline;">poet</a>, "has the power to 'retune' and reconnect a discordant, divided world."<abbr title="IIbid." style="max-width: 100%;"><a name="_ednref2" href="main/culture/cultivating-the-human-spirit/overview.html#_edn2" style="color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%; text-decoration: underline;"><span style="max-width: 100%;">2</span></a></abbr> For Ikeda, art and culture are more than forms of entertainment. They are the living expression of the human spirit and the chords that connect not only individuals but cultures, drawing them together in recognition of our common humanity.</p> <p style="max-width: 100%;">As Ikeda wrote, "The life and essence of art--whether it be painting, music, or dance--lies in expressing through a wellspring of emotion the universal realm of the human spirit. It is a melding of the individual and the universal. That is why great art reaches out beyond ethnic and national barriers to move people all over the world."<abbr title="Ikeda, Daisaku. 2001. Much of Ikeda's life and energy focused, in various ways, on exploring and revitalizing this connection, at both an individual and institutional level. He founded an international concert association and fine arts museums to promote peace through cultural exchange and he was, as mentioned, a prolific poet and author as well as <a href="nature/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%; text-decoration: underline;">photographer</a>.</p> <p style="max-width: 100%;">The Buddhist movement that Ikeda headed could itself be described as a movement to encourage the "poetic spirit" within all people. He described it as a movement to nurture and cultivate the potential within human life and bring peace and culture to blossom through the ideals of Buddhism.</p> <p style="max-width: 100%;">Art, he affirmed, is an irrepressible and natural expression of humanity, and it is also inextricably linked to religion, in as much as it functions or seeks to effect the "melding of the individual and the universal."<abbr title="Ikeda, Daisaku. 2001. <br>When Mr Toda discussed the Chinese classic Records of the Three Kingdoms, he would sometimes remark regretfully that for all Zhuge Liang's extraordinary talents, he didn't have the time or good fortune to raise sufficient successors.
<br>
<br>In contrast, we the Soka Gakkai youth of that time had the fortune of being trained by Mr Toda, his warm compassion nurturing us like the sun, and working alongside him to build an indestructible castle of capable people. The debt we owe him is truly profound.
<br>
<br>*I made a deep vow and commitment that I had been born in this world to ensure that the youthful Bodhisattvas of the Earth Mr Toda had called forth would all grow splendidly and become happy, and to create an unending stream of outstanding capable people who would contribute to kosen-rufu and society.*

<div style="text-align: left;"><b>The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings</b></div>
<br /><br />_[Slide 2]_<br /><br /><div><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>(A) Background</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings (OTT, also known as Ongi kuden) is a compilation of lectures that Nichiren Daishonin gave on important selected passages of the Lotus Sutra while residing on Mount Minobu. Containing the essence of the Daishonin's teachings, it was transcribed and compiled by the Daishonin's close disciple and successor, Nikko, and with the Daishonin's permission, handed down to posterity.</div><div><br /><br />_[Slide 3]_<br /><br /><br />Compiled in two volumes, Part 1 of The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings begins with a discussion of the term Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and is followed by comments on key passages from the "Introduction" (1st) Chapter, then proceeding through each chapter to the "Emerging from the Earth" (15th) Chapter of the Lotus Sutra.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Part 2 begins with comments on key passages from the "Life Span" (16th) Chapter to the "Encouragement of the Bodhisattva Universal Worthy" (28th) Chapter of the Lotus Sutra, followed by comments on the Immeasurable Meanings Sutra and the Universal Worthy Sutra, which are known as the Opening and Closing sutras of the Lotus Sutra respectively.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">When explaining the meaning of each of the key passages of the Lotus Sutra, the Daishonin first cites as references, the major works of T'ien-t'ai and Miao-lo. This will then be followed by a statement, "The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says*, afterwhich the Daishonin interprets the same passage from the standpoint of the teachings of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In his lectures, the Daishonin gives his explication of the key passages in the Lotus Sutra and its Opening and Closing Sutras from the standpoint of the Daishonin's Buddhism to clarify the wonderful power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the fundamental Law of the universe, and the immeasurable benefits one can accrue by practising this teaching.</div><div><br /><br />_[Slide 4]_<br /><br /><br />The portion that we are studying this month is from the section titled "<b>Point Two, on the persons who 'have fulfilled their great vow, ... because they pity living beings, they are born in this evil world so they may broadly expound this sutra</b>'" under "Chapter Ten: The Teacher of the Law, Sixteen important points".</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">(So let's read the passage proper together)</div><div><br /><br />_[Slide 5]_<br /><br /><br /> <br /><b> The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: The “great vow” refers to the propagation of the Lotus Sutra. “Because they pity living beings” refers to all the living beings in the country of Japan. The persons who “are born in this evil world” are Nichiren and his followers. “Broadly” means to expound the sutra throughout the southern continent of Jambudvipa. “This sutra” refers to the daimoku. Now the above passage refers to Nichiren and his followers, who chant the daimoku, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.</b></div><div><div><b>(The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 82)</b></div> <br /><br /><br />_[Slide 6]_<br /><br /><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>(B) Key Points for Sharing</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Key Learning Points of the Gosho Passage:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">1. The Mission of Bodhisattvas of the Earth Is to Impart Hope and Courage to the People</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">2. Nichiren Buddhism Enables Us to Change Karma into Mission</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">3. Our Struggle for Kosen-rufu Helps Us Achieve Our Human Revolution</div>
<div><div> <br /><br />_[Slide 7]_ <br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /><b>1. The Mission of Bodhisattvas of the Earth Is to Impart Hope and Courage to the People</b></div></div><div><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 8]_<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> <b> This passage from The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teaching is the portion where Nichiren Daishonin explains on the following passage from “The Teacher of the Law” (10th) Chapter of the Lotus Sutra: “… you should understand that these people …. have fulfilled their great vow, and because they take pity on living beings they are born in this evil world so they may broadly expound this sutra.” (The Lotus Sutra and Its Opening and Closing Sutras, p 200)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b> In this way, “The Teacher of the Law” Chapter expounds that those who propagate the teachings of the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law are all originally magnificent Bodhisattvas who have voluntarily chosen to be born in this evil age to lead the suffering people to happiness.</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> Ikeda Sensei explains this point in his guidance in this manner:</div>
<div><br /><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 9]_<br /> <br /><br /> <br /> <b> In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin states: “The ‘great vow’ refers to the propagation of the Lotus Sutra”. (OTT, p 82)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b> The great vow of kosen-rufu is the pledge that fills the hearts of the Daishonin’s followers.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b> Propagating the Lotus Sutra, the teaching of universal enlightenment—in other words, spreading the quintessential Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo—means widely and deeply instilling the philosophy of respect for human dignity and the sanctity of life in society.</b></div><div><br /><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 10]_<br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /> <b> It means reaching out to those who are suffering, and kindling a flame of hope and courage in their hearts to go on living and overcome all adversity.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b> It means upholding the ideal of realizing a peaceful and prosperous society based on the humanistic principles of Buddhism, and laying an indestructible foundation for world peace.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b> Advancing kosen-rufu is unquestionably the key to transforming the destiny of all humanity.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>(From President Ikeda’s Essay Series, “Our Brilliant Path to Victory”)</b></div>
<div><div style="text-align: left;"><b> </b></div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> If we are true Bodhisattvas of the Earth striving to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime to secure a life of genuine happiness, then we must take actions and strive for the realization of kosen-rufu.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> The Daishonin states in this Gosho passage: “The persons who “are born in this evil world” are Nichiren and his followers.”</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">In our world today, it is we, the members of the Soka Gakkai who are actually reaching out to those who are suffering and kindling a flame of hope and courage in their hearts to go on living and overcome all adversity in reality.</div><div><br /><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 11]_<br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /><b>2. Nichiren Buddhism Enables Us to Change Karma into Mission</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Despite confronting adversities oneself, he or she continues to reach out to others who are also challenging difficulties, empathize with them, pray with them and overcome the challenges together with them – this is the way of life of a genuine bodhisattva.</div><div><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 12]_<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><b>In “The Teacher of the Law” Chapter of the Lotus Sutra, it is expounded that “These people voluntarily relinquish the reward due them for their pure deeds and, in the time after I have passed into extinction, because they pity living beings, they are born in this evil world so they may broadly expound this sutra. (The Lotus Sutra and Its Opening and Closing Sutras, p 200) </b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>In Buddhism, this is termed the principle of “voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma”.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>In other words, by transforming our karma through the practice of faith, we are proving the greatness and validity of Nichiren Buddhism.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>On top of this, through our own actual proof of overcoming adversities, we are able to ignite the light of hope in the hearts of those who are confronting painful hardships by convincing them that they, too, can definitely enjoy happiness in life, just as we do. </b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Ikeda Sensei taught us that such a way of life is one in which we transform our karma into mission.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In this way, Soka Gakkai members who are spreading the teachings of the Mystic Law are great Bodhisattvas who are fulfilling their mission for kosen-rufu. As such, there is no way that they cannot overcome their difficulties in life as these struggles are meant to lead others to happiness.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Ikeda Sensei explains this point in this manner:</div><br /><br /> <br />_[Slide 13]_<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><b>To simply view your sufferings as "karma" is backward-looking. We should have the attitude: "These are sufferings I took on for the sake of my mission. I vowed to overcome these problems through faith."</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>When we understand this principle of "voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma," our frame of mind is transformed; what we had previously viewed as destiny, we come to see as mission. There is absolutely no way we cannot overcome sufferings that are the result of a vow that we ourselves made.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>(From President Ikeda’s discussions on “The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra”)</b></div>
<div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Just as Sensei teaches us in this guidance, let us reach out to the person who is experiencing great challenges in life right in front of us, impart warm encouragement by sharing our own experiences of faith with powerful conviction.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><br />_[Slide 14]_<br /><br /><br />
<div><b>3. Our Struggle for Kosen-rufu Helps Us Achieve Our Human Revolution</b></div><div><br /><br /><br /><br />_[Slide 15]_<br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /> <b>The greatest wish of the Buddha is the happiness of all living beings</b>. And this is the very purpose of Buddhism.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> For this reason, Nichiren Daishonin says here in this Gosho passage that <b>“The “great vow” refers to the propagation of the Lotus Sutra”, teaching us that our great vow is to propagate the teachings of the Mystic Law</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> During the Daishonin’s time, the people were living in fear and insecurity amidst great social turmoil whereby natural disaster, epidemic and famine were rampant.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> It was a time where people could only think about themselves. But the Daishonin taught that one should not only work for one’s own happiness, one should also strive to contribute to the happiness of others.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> Why did he do so? This is because <b>by sharing the same vow as the Buddha, the Buddha’s wisdom and courage will well forth from the depths of one’s life, thereby elevating and forging one’s state of life.</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div><div><div>_[Slide 16]_</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div></div></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"> The Daishonin concludes this Gosho passage by stating: <b>“‘This sutra’ refers to the daimoku. Now the above passage refers to Nichiren and his followers, who chant the daimoku, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.”</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b> </b>In the context of our contemporary world today, <b>it is the members of the Soka Gakkai who are exerting themselves in the practice of chanting the daimoku of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and striving to realize the happiness for oneself and others throughout the world based on the great vow to lead all people to happiness in exact accord with the spirit of Nichiren Daishonin.</b></div>
<br /><br />_[Slide 17]_</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /><div><b> In his dedication inscribed on the monument that graces the entrance lobby of the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu in Shinanomachi, Tokyo, titled “The Vow for Kosen-rufu”, Ikeda Sensei states as follows:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>Kosen-rufu is the path to attaining universal peace and prosperity. It is our great vow from time without beginning for the enlightenment of all people….</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>It is my most heartfelt wish that all our precious members, directly linked to Nichiren Daishonin and following the lead of the three founding presidents of the Soka Gakkai, will unite in the spirit of “many in body, one in mind” to build an ever stronger groundswell for kosen-rufu, for world peace, into the eternal future.</b></div>
<div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: left;">In this way, it is through our daily practice of faith and efforts made to fulfil our vow for kosen-rufu as the Daishonin’s disciples that we can achieve our human revolution.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">As we commence this “Year of Fresh Departure for a Youthful Soka Gakkai Worldwide”, let each one of us set concrete personal goals for kosen-rufu with an ever-youthful spirit and make this year a year of unprecedented victories in our lives and for kosen-rufu!</div>

<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>

<div></div><div><b> If you continue living as you are now, there can be no doubt that you will be practising the Lotus Sutra twenty-four hours a day. <div>(The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol 1, p. 905)</div>
<div> </div><div>____<br /> </div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 3]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>(A) Background</b></div>
<div> </div><div><div>·Nichiren Daishonin <b>Composed this letter on April 11, 1278, at Mount Minobu.</b><br /></div>
<div></div>
<div><br /></div><div>·As the title of the gosho suggests "Reply to a Believer" <b>Recipient: A leading lay disciple of the Daishonin but the person’s exact identity and the circumstances surrounding the letter are unknown</b>. <br /></div>
<div></div>
<div><br /></div><div>·However, <b>from the content and the Daishonin’s use of the phrase, “your service to your lord”, we can surmise that the letter was addressed to a samurai who was in the service of a high ranking official.</b></div><div><br /></div>
<div></div>
<div></div></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 4]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><br /></div><div>- In 1260, Nichiren Daishonin composed the treatise "Rissho Ankoku Ron" (On establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land) and submitted to the Kamakura Shogunate.</div><div><br /></div><div>- Since carrying out this act of remonstration, the Daishonin was subjected to various persecutions including exiles to Izu Peninsula and Sado Island.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>·Four years after the Daishonin was pardoned from his exile at Sado, he received news that there was a plot to send him to exile for the third time.</b></div><div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>·And this letter was written after he received this information from this disciple.<br /><br /></b></div><div><b>·Regarding the possibility of a third exile, the Daishonin writes in this letter, “Even if I were to be exiled again, it would bring me a hundred, thousand, ten thousand, million times greater good fortune…” (WND-1, p. 905)</b></div>
<div></div>
<div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i><span style="color: red;"><b>[Slide 5] </b></span></i></div><div><br /></div><div><div><b>·The Daishonin states that this would further clarify that he is a votary of the Lotus Sutra who has practised in exact accord with the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. <br /><br /></b></div><div><b>·In fact, the Daishonin even says, “How wonderful if that were to come about!” (ibid) expressing his great desire for this persecution to happen so that he can further prove the validity of his teachings.</b></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>
<div></div></div><div><i><span style="color: red;"><b>[Slide 6] </b></span></i></div><div> </div><div><div><b>·The Daishonin also describes his resolve to continue in his struggle to prove the righteousness of his teachings.</b></div><div><b><br />·The Daishonin concludes this writing by calling forth to the recipient of this letter to make up his mind to base his life on faith no matter what the circumstances and regard his service to his lord as the practice of the Lotus Sutra, teaching him to show actual proofs of victory in the realities of society.</b></div><div><b><br />·This is the passage we are studying today.</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><br /></div></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 7]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><div>So let's go into studying the Gosho passage.</div><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><b>(B) Key Points for Sharing</b></div>
<div> </div>
<div><b>Key Learning Points of the Gosho Passage:</b></div>
<div>1. It is important to <b><u>win the trust of others</u></b></div>
<div>2. <b><u>Buddhism</u></b> is a transformative force that brings about positive changes in reality</div>
<div>3. <b><u>Our daily life</u></b> is where we do our human revolution</div>
<div> </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 8]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><div>The first learning point is...</div></div><div><br /></div><div><b>1. It is important to win the trust of others</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 9]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div>At the outset of this Gosho passage, Nichiren Daishonin says, </div><div><b>“If you continue living as you are now, there can be no doubt that you will be practicing the Lotus Sutra twenty-four hours a day.” (WND-1, p. 905) </b></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>These are words of appreciation, praising his disciple’s efforts in carrying out his duties at work with dedication and integrity. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Since our daily life, including our work, is where we carry out our practice of the Lotus Sutra, the Daishonin assures us that earnestly applying ourselves to our work is equivalent to practising the Lotus Sutra day and night.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>When this letter was written (in 1278) at Mount Minobu, the community of the Daishonin’s disciples were subjected to intense persecutions by the authorities. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>To his disciples who were facing such harsh circumstances, the Daishonin encourages them that practising faith is not something extraordinary. </div><div><br /></div><div>It just means to win the trust of others through our sincere and earnest actions and fulfil our mission right where we are right now.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>With regard to this point, Ikeda Sensei says in his guidance:</div>
<div><br /></div><div><i><span style="color: red;"><b>[Slide 10] </b></span></i></div><div> </div>
<div><b> Nichiren Daishonin says, “Regard your service to your lord as the practice of the Lotus Sutra.” (WND-1, p 905) Just as the Daishonin teaches here, the place where we carry out our daily activities, including our place of work, is the platform for our Buddhist practice.</b></div>
<div><b><br /></b></div><div><b> Toda Sensei used to remind us that earning the “trust” from others is of utmost importance.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 11]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b> In order to do so, we need to have absolute conviction in faith. We must discard arrogance and complacency and forge our lives so that we will never be swayed by anything….</b></div>
<div><b><br /></b></div><div><b> All our hard work based on sincere faith will shine with the brilliance of human revolution. Let us not forget that it is within such struggle that virtues such as fortitude, integrity and trustworthiness are polished and brought to shine from within our lives.</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div>
<div><i>(Tentative translation from President Ikeda’s Essay Series,</i></div>
<div><i>“The Song of Human Victory”)<br /></i><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 12]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div>The 2nd learning point is...</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>2. Buddhism is a transformative force that brings about positive changes in reality</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>Buddhism does not exist apart from the realities of society. </div><div><br /></div><div>Soka Gakkai members around the world have been carrying out their Buddhist practice while deeply cherishing the principle of “putting Buddhism into action in society” in their hearts.</div>
<div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 13]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>In our context today, the phrase “your service to your lord” in the Gosho passage, “Regard your service to your lord as the practice of the Lotus Sutra”, corresponds to the role we fulfil as an individual in society – specifically, it refers to our occupation or work, the source of our livelihood.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><b><i><span style="color: red;">[Slide 14]</span></i></b></div><div>In this letter, the Daishonin further cites the words of the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai, which reads: <b>“No worldly affairs of life or work are ever contrary to the true reality (the Mystic Law).” (WND-1, p. 905)</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 15]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>The Lotus Sutra passage the Daishonin quotes here is from the “Benefits of the Teacher of the Law” (19th) chapter, which details the benefit of the “purification of the six sense organs”, that is obtained by those </b><b>who embrace the Lotus Sutra. </b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>The passage in question specifically refers to the “purification of the mind”. </b></div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 16]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>In other words, when the workings of their hearts and minds are purified through upholding and practicing the Mystic Law, they will naturally be able to perceive everything that happens in life based on the correct perspective of faith. </b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>As such, they will naturally teach and speak in accord with the principles of Buddhism.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>That is why by striving in our practice of faith, we can shine with Buddhist wisdom and become a person who is assuring and trustworthy in our place of work, communities and families.</div>
<div><br /></div><div>By anchoring our lives on faith, we can turn all our activities in society into a transformative force to bring about positive changes in reality and attain a state of absolute happiness.</div>
<div> </div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 17]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div>The last learning point is...</div><div><b>3. Our daily life is where we do our human revolution</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Nichiren Daishonin then concludes this Gosho passage with these words: </div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 18]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>“This is what is meant by ‘No worldly affairs of life or work are ever contrary to the true reality’.”</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>Since “all worldly affairs of life or work” are never contrary to the “true reality”, or Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can broadly surmise that our Buddhist practice encompasses all activities in society. These activities in society does not only refer to one’s job. </div><div><br /></div><div>It includes all our engagements in society and our daily life including doing household chores, raising children, parenting, taking up the challenge to upgrade ourselves in various skills and so forth. </div><div><br /></div><div>For students, it includes studying and participating in CCA activities.</div>
<div><br /></div><div>Each one of us living in this contemporary world is confronting various challenges in life. </div><div><br /></div><div>These may include challenges at work, in our families, with our health, parenting or caregiving issues we face at home. </div><div><br /></div><div>However, Nichiren Buddhism teaches that all of these challenges serve as opportunities for us to forge and develop our lives based on faith.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sensei explains this point in his guidance in this manner:</div><div><br /></div>
<div><i><span style="color: red;"><b>[Slide 19] </b></span></i> </div>
<div><b>Regarding their jobs as training grounds for forging themselves, Soka Gakkai members have striven to become indispensable assets to their workplaces. And there are countless examples of members showing remarkable actual proof of the power of Buddhist practice and winning the trust and respect of their employers and colleagues.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[ Slide 20]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">.</span></b></i></div><div><b>That is because they strove in accord with the Daishonin’s teaching that “The place where the person upholds and honors the Lotus Sutra is the ‘place of enlightenment’ [LSOC28, 364] to which the person proceeds” (cf. OTT, 192). In other words, they bravely confronted their challenges and made persistent efforts in the place where they were, powered by none other than their Buddhist faith and practice.</b></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>
<div></div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div><i><span style="color: red;"><b>[Slide 21</b><b>]</b></span></i></div><div><b>Today, the experiences and actual proof of our members throughout Japan and around the world are testifying to the irrefutable power of Nichiren Buddhism.<br /></b></div></div>
<div><b>(From President Ikeda Study Lecture Series,</b></div>
<div><b>“Buddhism of the Sun, Illuminating the World”)</b></div>
<div><b> </b><br /> </div>
<div><br /></div><div>No matter what adversities we may be confronting now, </div><div>let’s persist in our efforts to surmount them all with the conviction that it is from this moment, </div><div>from where I am right now that my triumphant drama of human revolution will begin.</div><div><br /></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">[Slide 22]</span></b></i></div><div><i><b><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">THANK YOU :)</span></b></i></div>

<br style="max-width: 100%;"> "一个人伟大的人间革命终将转变一个国家的宿命,进而也能转变全人类的宿命。" <br style="max-width: 100%;"><br style="max-width: 100%;"> <em style="max-width: 100%;"><strong style="max-width: 100%;">创价学会纪念日</strong></em></p> </div> </div> <div class="scrollable" style="max-width: 100%; <br>This is the final set of poems by sensei
<br>
<br>
<br>______
<br>"As the photo sessions were coming to a close, a handsome, tanned youth exclaimed with passion in his voice: "Sensei! Thank you! We young men's division members are determined to live up to your expectations and fight and win!"
<br>Shin'ichi smiled warmly and replied in earnest: "That's right. When the mentor cannot take action out in front, it's the job of the disciples to stand up and do so in the mentor's stead. You're not my true disciples if you can't rouse energy or courage because you can't meet me in person. Please create an unprecedented groundswell of progress for kosen-rufu with bold efforts surpassing your mentor.
<br>"It is precisely for a time such as this that I have guided and encouraged you, giving my all to fostering you.
<br>"Now is the time for you to proudly declare, 'Leave it to us! Watch our struggle!' and go out to encourage and brighten the hearts of the members on my behalf. That is the true spirit of mentor and disciple. Each of you is Shin'ichi Yamamoto! I didn't raise you to be weak or fainthearted young people who cannot show their real strength at a crucial moment. Now is the time for you to take responsibility for the Soka Gakkai in your own communities. Nothing would be more disappointing than if, at such an important time, you were to give in to feelings of sadness and not be able to fully exert yourself.
<br>"Those are my feelings, a cry from my heart. I'm counting on you!"
<br>The eyes of the young people present sparkled with burning determination. Some tightened their jaws, and others balled their fists in firm resolve.
<br>
<br>Addressing a gathering of 10,000 youth division members in October 1954, Josei Toda had said: "I hope you will rise bravely to meet the many challenges that lie ahead."
<br>Shin'ichi felt exactly the same.

<br>
<br>
<br>
</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>4. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>5. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>6. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>7. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>8. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>9. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>10. </div><div>1. </b></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>12. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>13. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>14. <i><span style="font-size: xx-small;"> </span></i></b><i><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(《此经难持书》1182 页),</span></i></div><div>一生持续信心 正是成佛的要诀。 </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>15. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>16. </div><div> </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>17. 这实在很难能可贵啊!"</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>18. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>19. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>20. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>21. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>22. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>23. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>24. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>25. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>26. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>28. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>29. (御书 877 页)</div><div><br /></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>30. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>31. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>32. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>33. (御书文 白并列本 III,259 页)</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>34. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>35. </div><div>《研习胜利经典——御书》</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><i>36. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>38. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>39.

<div><br /><i>[Slide2]<br /></i><b> On the Buddha’s Prophecy</b></div>
<div><b><br />The moon appears in the west and sheds its light eastward,1 but the sun rises in the east and casts its rays to the west. The same is true of Buddhism. It [the Buddhism of Shakyamuni] spread from west to east [making its way from India to Japan] in the Former and Middle Days of the Law, but [the great Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] will travel from east [Japan] to west in the Latter Day.<br />(The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, Vol 1, p. 401)</b></div>
<div><br /></div>
<div><br /><i>[Slide3]<br /></i>(A) <b>Background</b><br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Nichiren Daishonin wrote this Gosho at the age of 52 on May 11, 1273 at Ichinosawa on Sado Island.</b></li></ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>This Gosho : “On the Buddha’s Prophecy” concerns mainly with fulfilling or actualizing the Buddha’s prophecy for the future.</b></li></ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>The Daishonin reveals that he who has appeared at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law and endured through various persecutions to propagate the Mystic Law, is the votary of the Lotus Sutra.</b></li></ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>He “will establish and spread abroad widely throughout the world , the object of devotion of the essential teaching, or the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo” ,thereby fulfilling Shakyamuni Buddha’s prophecy.</b></li></ul> <br /></div>
<div><br /><i>[Slide4]<br /></i>(B) Key Points for Sharing</div>
<div><br /><b>Key Learning Points of the Gosho Passage:<br /></b><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><b>A Teaching Where Each Person Comes to Shine as a Sunlike Presence</b></li><li><b>Spreading Buddhism Means to Make Efforts To Do One’s Human Revolution</b></li><li><b>Nichiren Buddhism Enables All People to Cause the Sun of Happiness to Rise in Their Hearts</b></li></ol></div>
<div><br /><i>[Slide5]<br /></i><b>1. A Teaching Where Each Person Comes to Shine as a Sunlike Presence</b></div>
<div><br />The title of this writing, “On the Buddha’s Prophecy” was given by Nichiren Daishonin. The word “prophecy” refers to the future envisioned through the Buddha’s words. </div>
<div><br />In the passage preceding this passage that we are studying this month, <b>Nichiren Daishonin says, “By denouncing Nichiren, you would make lies of the Buddha’s prophecies.” (WND-1, p. 401)</b> </div>
<div><br /><b>The Daishonin reveals here that he has, through his actions and life, actualized Shakyamuni Buddha’s prophecy, preventing it from becoming a lie.</b></div>
<div><br /><b>The Daishonin then reveals his prophecy from the standpoint of the original Buddha of the Latter Day that Nichiren Buddhism will spread from Japan to the world without fail to lead all people in the Latter Day to happiness.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><br /></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div></div><div><div> <i>[Slide6]</i></div><div><b>The passage that we are studying this month is where the Daishonin makes this prophecy.</b></div>
<div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>The “moon” in the phrase, “The moon appears in the west and sheds its light eastward...” that opens this passage, refers to the Buddhism of Shakyamuni. </b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>The Buddhism of Shakyamuni was transmitted from the west to the east, from India to Japan via China and the Korean peninsula.</b></div>
<div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>The Daishonin then continues, “....but the sun rises in the east and casts its rays to the west”. In other words, the Daishonin is declaring that Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism of the sun will spread westwards from Japan to China and back to India, and eventually encompassing the entire world.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div><i>[slide7]</i></div><div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div></div></div><div><b>The Buddhism of the sun, which elucidates the heart of the Lotus Sutra, is a teaching that each person puts into practice through their own volition and active efforts. It is a teaching where each person comes to shine as a sunlike presence. </b></div><div><br /></div><div>And it was the Soka Gakkai that revived the Daishonin’s Buddhism in this modern age by putting his teachings into practice in the correct spirit, thereby actualizing this prophecy of the Daishonin. </div><div><br /></div><div>It was through the dedicated efforts of the mentors and disciples of the Soka Gakkai that the Daishonin’s Buddhism has spread to 192 countries and territories today.</div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide8]</div>
<div><b>2. Spreading Buddhism Means to Make Efforts To Do One’s Human Revolution</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>Interestingly, <b>no recipient is specified for this Gosho. This would seem to indicate that this work is an important writing meant as a will and testament addressed to all his followers in the present and future.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>Already while on Sado, the Daishonin had composed “The Opening of the Eyes” and “The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind”, which clarify that the Mystic Law, the fundamental law of universe, is the teaching for the enlightenment of all humanity in the Latter Day and that this Mystic Law is revealed and embodied in the form of the Gohonzon, the object of devotion.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>And in addition to this, the Daishonin reveals in this Gosho, “On the Buddha’s Prophecy”, that the Daishonin’s Buddhism will certainly spread widely throughout the world. However, we must be reminded that <b>in order to ensure the perpetuation of the Law throughout the ten thousand years and more in the Latter Day, our struggle for kosen- rufu to lead all people of the Latter Day to happiness must continue on eternally.</b></div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide9]</div><div>In the paragraph that follows the passage that we are studying this month, the <b>Daishonin stresses the importance of successors, stating: “Even when . . . [Buddhist] priests set out from Japan to take some sutras [back] to China, no one was found there who could embrace these sutras and teach them to others.”</b> (WND-1, p. 401)</div>
<div><br /></div><div>In other words, <b>people who “embrace these sutras and teach them to others” are indispensable. The undeniable reality is that no group or organization will endure without people who “embrace and teach” its ideals to others — in other words, without successors. <br /></b><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide10]</div><div>In terms of our daily practice of faith, what does it actually mean to “embrace” and “teach” others?</div><div><br /></div>
<div><b>Ikeda Sensei teaches us in his guidance: <br />Concretely speaking, to embrace and teach Buddhism is for each individual to believe in the infinite potential of their own life and continue to make efforts in their human revolution.</b></div>
<div><i>(From Ikeda Sensei’s Study Lecture Series, “Buddhism of the Sun, Illuminating the World”) <br /></i><br /></div><div>Every member in our Soka family is a person who “embrace these sutras and teach them to others” – that is, a successor who transmits Buddhism to future generations. </div><div><br /></div><div>By practicing the correct teachings of Nichiren Buddhism and making efforts in our human revolution, the eternal path for the future of worldwide kosen-ruifu is forged and will infinitely open forth far and wide.</div>
<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide11]</div><div><b>3. Nichiren Buddhism Enables All People to Cause the Sun of Happiness to Rise in Their Hearts</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>This year marks the 770th anniversary of the declaration of the establishment of Nichiren Daishonin’s teaching when he proclaimed Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to be the sole correct Buddhist teaching for leading all people in the Latter Day of the Law to enlightenment. From around this time, he adopted the name Nichiren (literally, sun lotus) in order to identify himself with the sun that illuminates the darkness shrouding the lives of the people.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>In this Gosho passage, <b>the Daishonin states, “[the great Law of Nam-myoho-renge- kyo] will travel from east [Japan] to west in the Latter Day”. </b></div><div><br /></div><div>This expresses the Daishonin’s absolute conviction that in accord with the “westward transmission of Buddhism”, the great Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will certainly spread throughout the world.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>At the same time, <b>it also reveals the universality of the Daishonin’s Buddhism as the Buddhism of the sun that leads all people, without any exception, to happiness.</b></div>
<div><br /></div><div>The Daishonin’s time was plagued with continuous natural disasters and epidemics. Amidst such turmoil, the Daishonin boldly chanted and spread the daimoku of Nam-myoho- renge-kyo, striving to his utmost to illuminate the lives of the people. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Daishonin’s Buddhism not only enables us to cause the sun of Buddhahood to rise in our own lives, it is also a teaching that brings the sun of happiness to rise in the lives of all people.</b></div>
<div>[Slide12]</div><div><br /></div><div><div><b>Ikeda Sensei teaches us in his guidance:</b></div></div><div><b>It [Buddhism of the sun] turns the life of each person into a "field of good fortune" of the Mystic Law, and it causes society and the world to bloom fragrantly with "human flowers" of the Mystic Law. The goals of the Buddhism of the sun are human revolution, the establishment of the correct teaching for the peace of the land, and worldwide kosen-rufu.</b></div><div><i>(From Ikeda Sensei’s Discussion on “The World of Nichiren Daishonin’s Writings”)</i></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide13]</div><div><div>Let's revisit the Key Learning Points of the Gosho Passage:</div><div><ol><li><b>A Teaching Where Each Person Comes to Shine as a Sunlike Presence</b></li><li><b>Spreading Buddhism Means to Make Efforts To Do One’s Human Revolution</b></li><li><b>Nichiren Buddhism Enables All People to Cause the Sun of Happiness to Rise in Their Hearts</b></li></ol></div></div><div><br /></div><div>Our world today that is filled with division and conflicts can be said to be shrouded by the state of fundamental darkness. Now, this present moment, is precisely the time for all of us to practice the teachings of the Buddhism of the sun and illuminate the lives of the people around us with the light of hope.</div><div><br /></div><div>[Slide14]</div><div>Thank you for your kind attention. :) </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>

appropriate karma Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda said: "If we were too perfect to begin with, others would find it hard to relate to us. That's why we specifically chose to be born as ordinary people, experiencing sickness and poverty, so that we could widely spread Buddhism in society. . . . Life is like playing a part in a drama." He often gave guidance in this vein. He also said: "I lost my wife and also my daughter. My businesses failed. Because I have known such sufferings, I was able to become the president of the Soka Gakkai." Those who haven't experienced hardships and sufferings can't be expected to understand others' feelings. Only those who have gone through painful struggles and trials can truly help others. To simply regard all our sufferings as karma is passive and defeatist. Instead, we should view them as sufferings we have voluntarily taken on as part of our mission, and which we have vowed to overcome through our Buddhist practice. The principle of "voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma"*teaches this fundamental transformation of attitude, or mind-set. We can definitely transform our karma into our mission. Since all our problems and struggles are expressions of our own vow, there is no way that we will not be able to surmount them. Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement, declared: "If I have to be reborn I should be reborn an untouchable, so that I may share their sorrows, sufferings, and the affronts leveled against them, in order that I may endeavor to free myself and them from that miserable condition."* This attitude is an expression of the teaching of "voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma"—of compassion, of sharing our lives with others. We [as Bodhisattvas of the Earth*] are born among those suffering the most. The Buddha resides among those who are suffering the most. Buddhism exists to enable those suffering the most to attain the greatest happiness.
