The formation of SGI

Jan 26, 1975, This Was the Year When Soka Gakkai International Was Established With Dr. Daisaku Ikeda As Its President. Based on the fundamentals of humanistic life philosophy of Buddhism, as propounded by lay priest Nichiren Daishonin, The Soka Gakkai International is a global network of buddhist practitioners.

"From a World of War to Peace. From a Society of hate to friendship. From Conflict to Harmony." Yes, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda is that One Man who amid countless challenges and criticism, rose up and exerted every bit of his nerve to turn theselofty ideals of peace, happiness and harmonyinto a visible and living reality.

January 26, 1975, the birth of SGI undoubtedly marks the victory of one man, the burning desire and the steadfast struggles of one man who dedicatedly strove to reach out to the world and fulfill the mission of his mentors Mr. Toda & Mr. Makiguchi, Yes, the mission of establishing a foreground where the religion of humanity and harmonious ties of peace & happiness based on the principles of Buddhism could flourish and blossom in every heart.. The city of Guam was chosen to be the center for establishing this global movement and making a new departure to change human history. On this day, ordinary men and women of resolute faith, heroic courage and lofty mission of kosen rufu gathered together from around 51 countries to celebrate this momentous start of securing world peace, with their pledge of dedicating their lives to the mission of propagating Nichiren Diashonin's Buddhism.

And today, through the courageous, compassionate and collective efforts of our mentor Dr. Ikeda and the pioneer members exerting themselves with spirited determination, the global network of SGI members currently consists of over 12 million members encompassing 192 countries and territories worldwide. This is indeed an unprecedented achievement that will shine forever in the history of Buddhism.!!!

Identifying and Winning Over Devilish Functions

Q: We often hear about the "three obstacles and four devils" in Nichiren Buddhism. What are they?

A: Attaining Buddhahood is an ongoing effort to strengthen our inherent Buddha nature. It is also a struggle to not give in to our inherent fundamental darkness, which is our most deeply rooted disbelief in the truth of our own Buddha nature.

Nichiren Daishonin explains that as we strive to reveal our enlightenment, "the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat" ("The Three Obstacles and Four Devils," The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p. 637). Rather than mythical demons or devils, the "three obstacles and four devils" refer to the functions of fundamental darkness arising from our own lives and the lives of others.

The three obstacles are: the obstacles of 1) earthly desires, 2) karma and 3) retribution. The four devils are: the hindrances of 1) the five components, 2) earthly desires, 3) death and 4) the devil king. (For a detailed explanation, see Learning From Nichiren's Writings: The Teachings for Victory, vol. 1, pp. 102–03).

These obstacles will definitely emerge in our lives to try to impede our Buddhist practice. In fact, the appearance of such obstacles signifies that we are practicing correctly.

Q: Why do we need to know about devilish functions?

A: In several of his writings, Nichiren cites the following passage from T'ien-t'ai's Great Concentration and Insight, which summarizes why we need to be vigilant in recognizing devilish functions for what they are: "As practice progresses and understanding grows, the three obstacles and four devils emerge in confusing form, vying with one another to interfere . . . One should be neither influenced nor frightened by them. If one falls under their influence, one will be led into the paths of evil. If one is frightened by them, one will be prevented from practicing the correct teaching" ("Letter to the Brothers," WND-1, 501).

In order to avoid being influenced, frightened or caught off guard by these cunning devilish functions, it's helpful to know why and how they appear.

Fundamental darkness manifests as the devil king of the sixth heaven, which represents negative forces that manipulate at will the lives of others, obstruct good and cause people to fall into evil paths. As we practice Buddhism and free ourselves from the cycle of suffering and help others do the same, this devil pulls out all the stops to prevent us from continuing in our cause, bringing forth doubts and negativity from within our own lives or utilizing the negativity of others to sway us.

Nichiren teaches: "Even if you should manage to overcome the first six [of the three obstacles and four devils], if you are defeated by the seventh [the devil king], you will not be able to become a Buddha" ("Letter to Misawa," WND-1, 894).

Q: So, how do we identify devilish functions?

A: As stated earlier, devilish functions arise in "confusing form," and are difficult to recognize and identify. Aiming to deprive us of the benefit of our Buddhist practice, they emerge to make us doubt the power of faith in the Lotus Sutra, sow disunity between mentor and disciple, separate us from others, undermine our belief in our Buddhahood, and prevent us from breaking through our perceived limitations and achieving our goals.

Nichiren explains the following about the devil king: "To deceive the true mind of the Buddha nature, he causes the people to drink the wine of greed, anger, and foolishness, and feeds them nothing but dishes of evil that leave them prostrate on the ground of the three evil paths" ("Letter to the Brothers," WND-1, 495–96). The devil king functions to cut off the flow of wisdom in people's lives, destroy the roots of goodness they've cultivated and keep them mired in the three poisons of greed, anger and foolishness, causing them to continue the cycle of suffering.

The devil king also employs the help of the "ten kinds of troops," or "ten armies," to impede our Buddhist practice. These functions that arise from our fundamental darkness are: 1) greed, 2) care and worry, 3) hunger and thirst, 4) love of pleasure (also, craving), 5) drowsiness and languor, 6) fear, 7) doubt and regret, 8) anger, 9) preoccupation with wealth and fame and 10) arrogance and contempt for others (see The Hope-filled Teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, p. 174).

A prime example of the devil king is the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood—whose role it was to uphold and protect Nichiren Buddhism. Ruled by the three poisons, they created division, confusion and doubt among practitioners, ultimately excommunicating in November 1991 the SGI, the community of believers advancing kosen-rufu.

Q: How then, do we win over such negative functions?

A: SGI President Ikeda urges us: "Either we advance or we retreat; there is no middle ground. Either we cringe in fear and surrender to the devilish functions—the negativity in our own lives or in the lives of others—or we challenge this negativity and deepen our conviction in faith. This difference in resolve determines everything" (The Hope-filled Teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, p. 167).

The first step in confronting obstacles is to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon with the determination to win over all devilish functions. The wisdom and powerful life state we gain through prayer allows us to see devilish functions for what they are, challenge them head-on and use them as an opportunity to transform our karma and establish even stronger resolve.

The second step is striving to unite with our fellow members in the harmonious community of practitioners. Rather than being controlled by our environment, we need to engage actively in our faith and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. Through interacting with those striving for kosen-rufu, we strengthen our own lives (see August 2013 Living Buddhism, p. 29).

Another key in winning over daunting obstacles is to advance with faith rooted in the oneness of mentor and disciple. President Ikeda states: "When mentor and disciple unite together with a lifelong commitment to advance kosen-rufu, they will be impervious to the onslaughts of devilish functions. Rejoicing at such onslaughts and summoning our resolve to fight our hardest is the way to defeat devilish functions. The shared struggle of mentor and disciple can vanquish all such obstacles, open a new age, and pave the way to a hope-filled future" (August 2013 Living Buddhism, p. 31).

With this resolve, the SGI has triumphed over tremendous obstacles and expanded its movement throughout the world. And in upholding this shared struggle of mentor and disciple, we will continue vanquishing devilish functions that are bound to arise as we strive toward Nov. 18, 2018, and our movement to awaken 50,000 young Bodhisattvas of the Earth who will stand up for the dignity of life, opening new pathways to peace.

Faith in the Mystic Law Puts Us on the Path to Absolute Happiness

Faith in the Mystic Law Puts Us on the Path to Absolute Happiness

These large carriages drawn by white oxen [the great white ox carts described in the Lotus Sutra] are able to fly at will through the sky of the essential nature of phenomena.

Those persons who come after me will ride in these carriages and journey to Eagle Peak. And I, Nichiren, riding in the same kind of carriage, will come out to greet them. From "On the Large Carriages Drawn by White Oxen" (WND-2, 976)

Miàofǎ shì bù xiàng juéduì xìngfú de guǐdào

Zìzài fēichí yú Fǎ xìng kōng zhī chē, nǎi míng dàbái niú chē yě.

Hòu wǒ ér lái zhòngrén, kě chéng cǐ chē lái Lngshān, Rìlián yì chéng dàbái niú chē wǎng yíng.

"Dàbái niú chē hán",(Yùshū 1671 yè)

The lives of those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and strive for kosen-rufu are certain to attain a magnificent state of happiness that will endure throughout the three existences of past, present, and future.

The great white ox carts are adorned with the seven kinds of treasures such as gold, silver, and precious gems, and fly freely through the sky of the essential nature of phenomena—the Dharma nature, or enlightenment— accompanied by more than sixty thousand Buddhas and bodhisattvas. (cf WND-2, 976) They are a symbol of the sublime life state we are ensured of.

Chàngniàn Miàofǎ, wèi guǎngbù bēnzǒu de shēngmìng, yǐ huò chéngnuò sānshì bùxiǔ de hàohàn xìngfú jìngjiè. Ér zhè bù yóu jīnyín děng qībǎo suǒ cǎishì, yǐjí yǔ liù wàn duō de fú púsà yīqǐ áoxiáng zài fǎ xìng tiānkōng, zhuāngyán wúbǐ de dàbái niú chē, jiùshì cǐ jìngjiè de xiàngzhēng.

Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law, even states that he will come to greet us in such a carriage. Please have deep confidence that you will enjoy boundless good fortune and benefit in lifetime after lifetime, a state of being in which both life and death are suffused with joy.

本 佛 甚至 说, 要 乘坐 这 部 大白 牛车 来 迎接。 我们 要 确信, 生生世世 一定 会 处于 无量 福德 满盈、"生 也 欢喜, 死 也 欢喜" 的 境地。

Běn Fó shènzhì shuō, yào chéngzuò zhè bù dàbái niúchē lái yíngjiē. Wǒmen yào quèxìn, shēngshēngshìshì yīdìng huì chǔyú wúliàng fú dé mǎnyíng,"shēng yě huānxǐ, sǐ yě huānxǐ"de jìngdì.

Discussion mtg gosho Jan 2018 -- Question and Answer on Lotus Sutra

Questions and Answers
about Embracing the Lotus Sutra

Everywhere other than the Capital of Tranquil Light is a realm of suffering.  Once you leave the haven of inherent enlightenment, what is there to bring you joy?  I pray that you will embrace the Mystic Law, which guarantees that people “will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences.”  This is the only glory that you need seek in your present lifetime, and is the action that will draw you toward Buddhahood in your next existence.  Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world.
_____

Background
  • Written in 1263 (Shortly after the Daishonin was pardoned and had returned to Kamakura following two years of exile on the Izu Peninsula.)
  • As the title suggests, this work discusses how one can attain buddhahood, the supreme life state, through embracing the lotus sutra in the form of 5 questions and answers.
  • The 1st question states that it is rare opportunity to be born a human being and the good fortune to encounter buddhism, the questioner asks: which teaching should one practice in order to attain buddhahood quickly? In answer, the daishonin declares that it is lotus sutra.
  • The 2nd question daishonin elucidates that his assertion of the sutra's supremacy among all the buddhist teachings is based on the buddha's own words as they appear in the sutras themselves.
  • The 3rd question says that the lotus sutra is shakyamuni buddha's ultimate teaching and is the true way that leads to buddhahood.
  • In reply to the The 4th question, the daishonin states that by singling out those of the 2 vehicles, for whom buddhahood was denied in the provisional teachings, and asserting that even these people can become buddhas through the power of the lotus sutra, it was made clear that lotus sutra is the teaching that opens the way to buddhahood for all people.
  • In the 5th question and answer section, the questioner asks how one should embrace and practise the lotus sutra in order to reach enlightenment quickly.

  • - Nichiren Daishonin replies that one need not master conceptual thought of meditative practice.

    - Rather, the essential thing is simply to have a heart of faith in this sutra, emphasizing the importance of faith.

    - on the other hand, the daishonin admonishes that should one lack faith, the buddha's power cannot reach one and therefore, one will not be able to be freed from his sufferings.

    - The daishonin also states that because the LS is supreme, the person who embraces it must accordingly be foremost among all others.

    - And if that is so, then to speak ill of that person is to speak ill of the law, and therefore, one should refrain from doing so .

  • In the concluding passage (which is this passage that we are learning today), the Daishonin stresses the very impermanent (fleeting) nature of human existence and teaches us not to be overwhelmed by arrogance and attachment and waste one's brief yet precious life in the pursuit of worldly fame and profit.

- Rather, one should dedicate oneself to faith in the Lotus Sutra throughout one's life.

- He declares that to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo oneself and to enable others to do the same are the most important tasks in this present existence, as this will remain the only memory of one's present life in this human world.

____
Main Points
  1. Buddhism exists so that reality can be transformed.
  2. Conviction gives rise to benefits
  3. The heart of compassion to lead others to happiness is the key to transforming one’s karma
1. Buddhism exists so that reality can be transformed
  • The world of enlightenment or the Buddha's land does not exist somewhere away from the real world.
  • It is in this world filled with sufferings that the realm of enlightenment, the buddha's land, is found.
  • The buddha expounds his teachings so that reality can be transformed.
  • The teaching that has the power to transform poison into medicine,
  • ... to transform the realm of suffering into the realm of enlightenment
  • ... is none other than the Mystic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

2. Conviction gives rise to benefits
  • The phrase, "enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences",
  • ...is a passage from "The parable of Medicinal Herbs" (5th) Chapter of LS.
  • It means that one who embraces the LS will enjoy peace and security in the present existence and will be born in good circumstances in future existences.
  • Here, it is important to correctly understand the meaning of "peace and security"
  • ... does not refer to a condition that is free of problems and hardships.
  • One can enjoy the life state of "peace and security" only if one has the powerful conviction that one can overcome any obstacle no matter how great, based on faith in the gohonozon.
  • If we live in a sturdy house, we will not be worried no matter how bad the weather, or how powerful the typhoon.
  • If we are driving a well-serviced, high-performance car, we will not have to worry even if we drive on uneven paths or roads with bad condition.
  • The "sturdy house" and "high-performance car" in these analogies correspond to "faith in the Gohonzon".

3. The heart of compassion to lead others to happiness is the key to transforming one's karma
  • By stating "single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same" in this passage,
  • the Daishonin is teaching us the importance of carrying out the practice of oneself and for others.
  • :
  • Bodhisattvas of the earth are bodhisattvas who have vowed to lead all people in the latter day to happiness
  • As such, when we take action based on the spirit of compassion to lead others to happiness,
  • ... by sharing buddhism with them, it activates the buddha nature from within us,
  • ... thus making it possible for us to transform our karma.
  • In this way, though it may seem as if we are striving for the happiness of others,
  • ... all our efforts made to contribute to the welfare of others,
  • ...imparting the light of hope to those around us,
  • ...also brightens our own life with fresh hope and makes it shine with good fortune and benefit.
  • It is just as the Daishonin says, "If one lights a fire for others, one will brighten one's own way."
// jump to slide ///

Taking to heart the words from the New Human Revolution,
"There is no more brilliant achievement in life than enabling another person to practice the Daishonin's Buddhism",
let us devote even greater energy to sharing the Daishonin's Buddhism with others
in this Year of Brilliant Achievement in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu!

____
{{
  • Nichiren Daishonin teaches in this passage that exerting ourselves in the practice of faith, in the spirit of practising for oneself and for others is the path that enables us to live an unsurpassed life of brilliant achievement and glory.
  • At the beginning of this passage, the Daishonin says that everywhere other than the "Captial of Tranquil Light" or the "Buddha's Land", is a realm of suffering, and that there is no other way to savour true joy other than manifesting the life state of a Buddha.
  • The Daishonin's buddhism teaches that the life state of buddhahood, that enables one to overcome all obstacles and sufferings, is found within the lives of all living beings and that it is through faith based on the Gohonzon that one can manifest this life state from within one's own life.
  • By manifesting the buddha nature, thereby carrying out one's human revolution and achieving an inner transformation in one's life, one can consequently transform one's circumstances and surroundings.
  • By so doing, one can forge a life state of indestructible happiness that remains undefeated no matter what may happen in the future.

  • And this life state of indestructible happiness is not confined to the present existence but will continue in future existences.  The Daishonin explains this point by quoting a passage from "the parable of medicinal herbs" 5th chapter of the LS which states that people "will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences".
  • By embracing the teachings of the Mystic law, one will enjoy a life state of peace and security in the present existences without fail.  In addition, the Daishonin emphasizes that embracing and practising the Mystic Law will become the foremost glory and brilliant achievement in one's life, serving as the driving force that leads one's life to the correct path in future existences.
  • What does it mean to "embrace the mystic law"? The daishonin teaches here that it means to "chant nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same".  The Daishonin adds that we should do so "single-mindedly".  As taught by the Daishonin here, a life dedicated to kosen-rufu, advancing together with our mentor and fellow members, is one that will remain as the only memory of our present life in the human world.
  • SGI President Ikeda says, "No matter how inconspicuous and modest, all actions taken for the sake of kosen-rufu, all that you have shared, all efforts you have exerted, and all hardships you experienced for kosen-rufu, will shine with increasing brilliance with the passage of time, as brilliant achievements in your lives."
  • In this "Year of Brilliant Achievements in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu", let's strive to achieve brilliant achievement in our lives and for kosen-rufu by courageously sharing the teachings of the Mystic Law with our friends based on the great conviction that "all people, without a single exception, can all enjoy true happiness in life through this practice of faith"!

Testimony by CCL

Good afternoon all leaders and members,

I am Cheng Liang, and I am here to share my testimony after practising for 35 years (since 1983),
the great philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism,
and under the guidance of Ikeda Sensei
and the nurturing environment of SGI and SSA
What kind of philosophy is ours?

Yes, it’s a philosophy that teaches that everyone has a buddha nature.

We have the buddha nature, and others as well.
This is kind of teaching is of utmost importance,
for it holds the key to the answers to the problems that modern society face!

Throughout my 35 years of practice,
I have seen many benefits, both conspicuous and inconspicuous.
Let me just share one recent victory at my workplace (in 2016).

I was nominated within the school the Caring Award for 2016.

Just to share a little background how I ended up being a teacher, and liking it.

After 12 years of electrical engineering background,
3 years in SP, 6 years in RSAF, 3 years in NTU doing electrical engineering,
I made a switch into teaching upon graduation from EEE,NTU in 1998.

Back then, job market was not so good.
As I flipped the papers, I see the advert, "Mould the future of the Nation"
... be a teacher.

I chanted to the Gohonzon about it, whether this job will suit me.

I also consulted my 2nd brother, who was then already in the profession for 3 years.

Furthermore, knowing that SGI first started as Soka Kyoiku Gakkai, and the emphasis on importance of education in a person's life --- The 3 main areas of SGI movement are none other than Peace, Culture and Education.

With all the factors influencing me to move into education, I plucked up the courage to give it a try by going for the all important interview.

The interviewing panel, made up of 6 principals, were very gruelling.

They really tried to shake my resolve of wanting to be a teacher.

One of them asked, "You had 12 years of electrical engineering background, are you seriously going to throw all of them away and join teaching?"

I reacted indignantly about this question as I felt I had what it takes to guide my students!

Still the question affected me quite badly and I thought, perhaps i wouldn't be accepted as a teacher.  Nevertheless, I went home and chanted to the gohonzon about the best possible outcome.

Yes, as you all would have known, after a week or so, I accepted a letter of acceptance to be a teacher at a Primary school!  After passing out from NIE, I started teaching in year 2000.

It had been 18 to 19 years since!  -- first 3 years was in a school in Yishun, and the other 16 years in a school in Tampines.

Has it been a bed of roses? ... far from it.

Surely, as in any job, there will surely be ups and downs in the job.

Ups will be when you get a raise, or are appreciated by your colleagues, pupils and parents.  --- but these are the small perks that brighten your day.

The downs are more...
- Our job doesn't just entail teaching.
- there are many deadlines to meet... whether lesson planning, CCA,
mandatory afternoon staff meetings / courses to attend, adhoc department assignments by middle management.
- all these are eating up time needed for marking.

- so it is not surprising that teachers will have to lug worksheets back to mark.
- while many professions are of the 8 to 5, ours goes into the evening,
- I sometimes (frequently) mark late into the night.

- and also there is workplace politics, colleagues trying to make you look bad so that they can look good. (not uncommon right?)

It is precisely in such environment that the practitioners of the lotus sutra must stand out!

The muddier the pond,  the more brilliantly the lotus flower must bloom!

Indeed, over the years, there were more than 2 times (2005 & 2010) that I had contemplated quitting the profession altogether.

But I had held back, each time because of the bigger goal of the potential of fundamentally touching lives.

One of the encouragement that keeps echoing in my mind was from Mr Chan, our study department chief.  He said, "For want of touching lives, you had signed up for teaching.  Now that you are given the opportunity, what do you do with it?"

This guidance, coupled with chanting, never fails to hold me back from making a rash decision when the going gets tough.

Also a gosho passage that I liked very much:
"As I have often mentioned before, it is said that, where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward. Your fellow samurai all slandered you to your lord, and he also has wondered if it was true, but because you have for some years now honestly maintained a strong desire for your lord’s welfare in his next life, you received a blessing like this. This is just the beginning; be confident that the great reward also is sure to come."
https://www.nichirenlibrary.org/en/wnd-1/Content/117

All along, I had made it clear to the management that I am not eyeing for any leadership role or other perks.

All I want is to be able to teach what I enjoy teaching and offer sincere help to those who need help.

In 2016, one of my middle management noticed my contribution in not just one area, but many others.

He made it a point to nominate me for this Caring Teacher Award, citing my contribution to my pupils, colleagues and school.

Voting was then carried out by the entire 120-strong staff and I was given the award.

In my acceptance write-up, I cited the guidance by sensei that says,

"Joy is not simply your personal, egoistic happiness.  Nor is it making others happy at the expense of your own happiness.  You and others delighting together, you and others becoming happy together..."

I really would like to take this opportunity to thank Sensei for his abundant encouragements that we receive every now and then.

Let us not take them for granted, but put them into action!

I'd like to conclude my sharing with one last sensei's guidance

Daily Encouragement
January 21

Humanity today lacks hope and vision for the future. It is for precisely this reason that the Bodhisattvas of the Earth have appeared. Without your presence, the future of humanity would be bleak and spiritual decline its destination. That is why you have been born in this age and are now playing an active role in society. This is the meaning of jiyu, or "emerging from the earth." Consequently, each of you will definitely become happy. Please be confident that you will lead lives overflowing with good fortune throughout the three existences of past, present and future.

Daisaku Ikeda, SGI President

____
As sensei aptly pointed out, we all are protagonists of this age of mappo (latter day of the law),
where it seems everywhere is "gloom and doom"
We, the comrades of bodhisattvas of the earth are born at this time,
not from coincidence,
but from our vow to reach out to others,
to lead them to the path of absolute happiness.

Let each one of us score great victories in our own arena in our lives,
through the practice of oneself and others,
under the guidance of Ikeda sensei.
Let our individual achievements collectively contribute
to this Year of Brilliant Achievement in the New Era of Worldwide Kosenrufu!

Cheers!
